Almost had a breakdown about the trip today...

When my husband came home from a consultants appointment (he has arthritis!) and was told that the consultant wants to start him on a new medication on the 25th February. We're due to leave on the 23rd February, and the consultant's reaction was "You can't go. Just cancel and get refunded!"

Of course, that's not truly an option because we're going on a BIG family holiday - it's not just a case of cancelling and rebooking it. We've been saving up for this trip for 3 years and looking forward to it for longer than that.

Anyway, to cut to the relief - we arranged with Virgin Atlantic to amend my husband's flight until the 26th, so he can have his injection and then fly out to meet us and only miss 3 days of the holiday. This means that I get the joy(!!) of flying with my 10 month old daughter and 4 year old son by myself (though my mum/step-dad will be in premium economy and my step-bro/his gf somewhere else in economy, so I won't be completely bereft of support and will have their help with luggage etc.

It also means I'll be the primary driver for the first few days and I've never driven and automatic, let alone driven in the US (though I've driven in France in my car, so been on the 'wrong side of the road' before).

I feel sad that my husband won't be with us for the first few days, and trying to decide what to do during those days so that he doesn't 'miss' out on too much.

As a total aside - anyone that's travelled with kids before - have you flown with a double pushchair? I've only ever travelled with a single before, but bought a 2nd hand baby jogger city double for the parks as my 4 year old has short legs and gets tired walking round the shops etc. Will virgin let me take it to the gate?

Can't offer any advice on the pushachair, I'm afraid, but I'm glad your DH is still able to go on the trip with you, albeit arriving later. Like you say, at least you will have some support from family on the way out. I am sure the driving will be fine. I would rather drive in Orlando than France any day fo the week and it really is pretty easy to drive an automatic.

i am sooooooooooo sorry...how very very very upsetting for you!!!
i know i would be beside myself...
i feel a tirade about doctors coming on so i'd better stop here or else it will get into very inappropriate language!!!

Sorry about you DH at least he's still coming although late.

On the stroller I would get the travel bag for it - as they collapse seat out it will just protect it during travel. You can take it to the gate.
