Almost bought BLT today, but not financially feasible at this time :(

We love the Contemporary and so we have been waiting for BLT for a long while - we love the decor and the location is perfect for our little family. We honestly thought that BLT would come to fruition a few years from now, and we had planned to buy in, but since it sprang up so fast, we were thrown for a loop. We had a nice long talk with our guide today, and then spent 1 hour discussing it amongst ourselves (it's our 10 year anniversary, so it would have been a lovely gift!), and realized that at this time, it's not financially feasible for us to purchase. We are are still paying off our AKV add-on (almost done), have 14 more payments left on our van, and 2 kids in private school, so it is just not in the cards for us at this time. He gave us information about selling our SSR contract to help finance this one, but that would actually cost us a lot money (way higher exchange rate, a bit of interest, commission/fees and would probably sell for less than we bought), and so that didn't make sense to us either.

We were sad at first when we called him back, but then we realized that we are lucky and grateful to be able to travel to WDW, for this we need to be thankful, especially considering the dire economy in your country right now. Our extra money will go to paying down our house faster, as well as paying off our AKV add-on. My hubby is a banker and so we get a very cheap rate, but we feel it's more important for us to continue to be financially responsible than to buy more points we don't really need.

Our guide said that they are almost at the limit for the founding members tiles - he said they sold 400 contracts just on the Member's Cruise this past week! He figures that it will be nearly impossible to get BLT at the 7 month mark based on this initial frenzy, but, he can't predict the future, so he says you never know what surprises might be in store for us.

We will definitely consider an add-on or resale in a few years (if any are available) once our other stuff is paid off - sometimes it's hard to be so practical and responsible!

To all those who have purchased - Congratulations! Here's hoping that we get to stay at BLT sometime in the next few years.

Tiger :thumbsup2

Smart move.

I got out of debt years ago and was amazed how much freedom I gained.

When you pay cash your purchasing power goes way up!!!!!....No need to divert funds to interest payments.

I am sorry you can't add on right now, but I think you are making the right decision for you and your family. Good work!

It is sometimes hard to walk away being fiscally responsible BUT given the economy and your young family, you all did the right thing. We wanted to buy OKW in 1994 but had to walk away until last year ( 2 kids in private school then private college). I don't think you will have to wait 14 years to purchase your BLT add on, but I'm willing to bet the magic will still be there for you when you're ready.

Good for you. And it is good to read your insight and thought process. I am 37, single with no kids...I have a really good job and I save agressively for retirement, but I just can't bring myself to buy into DVC yet. It is such a struggle as I have been daydreaming on a daily basis about DVC ownership for a few months now. Anyway, our current economic climate has me really scared and I just don't want to take the chance. Reading threads like yours helps me to know that I am doing the right thing. That's not to say that next week you won't be reading my thread that says, "I finally did it," but at least I am comfortable at this moment. Thanks.

You have made a very wise decision. You will always be able to add on at BLT. In the meantime, you own at two great resorts.

Thanks! We are very grateful to be able to own DVC, and make wonderful memories with our 2 amazing kids, so, the decision was actually easier than we thought. I just talked to my hubby who said he felt sick to his stomach when he answered the phone and heard our guide's voice, as he knew we then should at least hear him out and have an informative discussion about BLT. Once we decided that it wasn't a sound decision at this time, he said he felt so much better and at peace with our decision not to buy.

We shook hands and sealed our deal with a hug that our goal is to do an add-on at BLT one day, and that is what we are working towards. Our guide says that they are feeling that BLT is going to sell out quite quickly, but as my hubby says, there will always be resales or add-ons available as that is the nature of the vacation business. As people's lives or needs change, that may be the best opportunity for us to do our add-on. In the meantime, we will enjoy our DVC as we have already booked AKV for next summer, and am hoping for Beach Club @ 7 months as we have fallen in love with the Epcot resort area and Stormalong Bay after our recent Yacht Club stay. Life is good!

Happy DVC vacations to us all, Tiger :)

Wow, happy anniversary. Thank you for sharing your story.

I would also like to commend you on your tough decision. Our family also operates on a cash basis for things like this, and I, too, feel lucky that we were just able to plop down a large sum for a big AKL contract. We have paid almost half of it back already! (Yes, we pay ourselves back. We don't just "earn" it back through future vacation discounts. My husband is also a number cruncher!) :-)

While it is hard, sometimes, to pass up these kinds of opportunities, it is so much more enjoyable when you know it's the right decision, and not just wonder if it's the right decision. Too many people make the wrong choice - and that is how our country has ended up in this horrific financial condition.

There will be plenty of resales available when the time comes for you to add on. And you'll probably get a much better deal then, anyway. :-)

Well done, I say! :-)

It sounds like you made the right decision for your family-not stressing over finances is always the best thing! Also, once the excitement has died down, I'm sure we'll all get a chance to stay at BLT at the 7 month window, if only for a short stay, if we're flexible with travel times! :)

I would never have purchased any DVC property if I still had a house mortgage, but that's just me. I hate debt of any kind.

BLT will still be there in the future when you can better afford it.

Congratulations on your non purchase!! :scared1:
Dh & I finaiced half our purchase and didn't have any problems with that. We still have a mortgage and we're fine with that so I can't sing the trying to be debt fee song.

It is hard even as an adult to delay our dreams for a while.

We have 2 kids starting college within the next 3 years ourselves so I'm not even going to look at the models...;)
I took my son on a tour at LSU a couple of months ago and every time they would mention the tuition, I would think "you know how many points I could buy for that" :rolleyes1

Happy Anniversary

why did you post this? Hopefully it was to tell us that your guide lied to you. 400 160 pt contracts on the cruise, not likely. BLT will have contracts available in 1yr, 2yrs and even 3 years. Rest easy, you'll be able to continue to wax poetic until that van is paid off.

Huh? Tiger

Sounds like you made the right decision for your family. I think that your guide is being overly optimistic as far as how quickly it will sell and the availability at 7 months. BLT is a large resort. Hopefully many of us will get a chance to stay there.

Enjoy your DVC

Many of us are optimistic about staying there booking 7 mos out after initial excitement dies down..Hope so, but for me its not life or death!

Plenty of other DVC resorts to be happy at IMHO!

I'm sure BLT will be lovely though!:goodvibes :goodvibes :goodvibes
