has anyone that has been on a plane lately know if you are allowed to take electronic devices such as ipods and dvd players. or are the restrictions still very strict.

Yes, you can take electronic devices on the planes. The only restriction on that was on flights to London - it was never on US flights.

I just flew to Vegas from Dulles and back (22-29 Oct) on Ted. IPODS, portable dvd players, laptops are allowed to be used once you are about 10 minutes into the flight. Cell phones are to be left turned off the whole flight (until you are on the ground and they announce you can turn them on). You also have to turn off electronics just before landing. They make announcements. The only things you really can't bring on board are liquids over the allowed amounts except for what is purchased once you pass security. And as the previous poster said, the ban never applied to electronics on US flights.
