alligators???

we went to WDW in 2003 and saw a real gator in the water between tom sawyer's island and frontierland and it was looking at us and i said it was and animatronic and so we threw a twig at it and it blinked so it was real! anyone else see him or is he still there??? thx

In Florida, it seems any large body of fresh water will have alligators at one point or another. I haven't seen this particular 'gator but it doesn't surprise me that you would see him. I've heard about alligators at one time or another in Seven Seas Lagoon and Bay Lake.

When they grow too big they are removed. There are quite a few gators on WDW property.

We stayed at Shades of Green recently. There are marshy ponds on both sides of the road when you enter the property. A walkway from SOG to the Poly runs along the road, so you can walk from SOG and take the monorail. There were signs all along the water area that said "Florida is a natural habitat, please do not feed the alligators" with a picture of an alligator. The kids were nervous, and made the grown-ups walk next to the water. My nephew even devised an escape route from any rouge alligators ("First, I would walk zig-zag, then jump over his head, then climb a tree!")

We never saw an alligator, but I am sure they were around. At least the kids did not run ahead of us while traversing "alligator creek!"

We stayed at Coronado Springs in June, and crossing one of the little bridges there was an alligator in the water! Have heard one of the bus drivers telling another passenger that he pulled into Wilderness Lodge bus stop and couldn't park the bus in its spot because an alligator was laying right there.

we where at the MK and standing behind the beverage shack just at the end of the bridge from BTMRR to Frotierland. He was in the water under the walkway. He surprised us and we are FL res. . He was about a 5 footer. The cast member just snickered when I mentioned it and he said yes they are common. INTERESTING

We were just talking at home how at one point there were less than 2,000 alligators in Florida. When they were put on the Endangered Species list, their numbers went to over a million. Apparently, when protected, they reproduce like bunnies!!

I heard thats why they got rid of the canoes because they couldn't do anything with the gators (protected i guess) and yes thats why you can't swim in the resort lakes because they are in there and there is no way to monitor their movement at night.

In September I looked and looked for alligators and did not see any. I even looked in the water behind the turkey leg cart in Frontierland. I was so disappointed. A guide at the Kennedy Space Center told me that it was too hot for them to be out sunning themselves.

Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM) is the reason why you are not allowed to swim in any of the WDW freshwater lakes. Disney does not want to run the risk of infecting their guests with the Naegleria fowleri ameba which is commonly found in all WDW freshwater lakes.

Was just about to post this and you beat me to it.

I love the parents that watch the kids wander in on the GF beach... and you see they're looking right at the sign. Most time time I try to warn them it's becuase the water isn't treated and they're exposing themselves to all sorts of fun and wonderful bacteria and small-call organisms. The look on their face is worth it every time:

Am I the only one who thinks gators are scary? Must be from living in Louisiana- nothing like waking up to find one of those things in your backyard!

exactly i hate gators for two reasons 1. i just am scared of the animal bad
wheb i see one i freak out 2. the university of that yucky school called florida teamname is gators

I have seen gators on occasion in WDW...saw one once near the boat landing at MGM...he was just a baby though, only about 2 feet long!!!

The boat driver said they move them when they get to be a certain size, and put them in water that is not so close to "guest areas". Apparently, they have a lot of "protected" wetlands on WDW property, so there are places to relocate the alligators.

Gators when they reach a certain size are usually destroyed. They have the ability to find their way home when they are larger.

WDW does have a wildlife refuge but it is about 40 mins from WDW.

After 3 years stationed at Ft. Stewart in Georgia you just assume that there will be gators in any fresh water in that area of the country. It never occured to me that people would be surprised by seeing gators in Fla. We make "spoting gators" a game for the kids.

A little off topic but we've always been pleasantly surprised at how much wildlife we see when we're at Disneyworld.
On the lake by MGM studios we've seen several bald eagles soaring and catching fish. We've seen deer in the same neighborhood as well as many armadillos LOL. I know Disney hates the 'dillos though.

We've seen snakes and squirrels, gators and lizards by the dozens. We've taken hours our of our busy schedules there just to go on critter hunts.
