I was seen at the dr and was prescribed a steroid and Augmentin. I finished the steroid but had a few days of the antibiotic left when I starting breaking out with this horribly itchy rash all over. I've been to the dr and given a shot and more steroids, so hopefully this will be gone soon. I'm sure this is not entirely uncommon, so I thought about seeking out others who this has happened to (with whatever medication it happens to be). Surely this itching will stop soon.......right??? ::yes:: :thumbsup2

Yes, I am allergic to several antibiotics. Penicillin, etc.
I have not pulled up Augmentin, but I believe it is a combination of two drugs??? One of which I am very allergic too.

Not uncommon, at all.

I would think that the steroids would act pretty quickly to alleviate the itching and inflamation.
If not, definitely call or see a Dr.

Yes, I am allergic to penicillin, so is DS. Take Benadryl.

My DD had an allergic reaction to Augmentin. She had taken it several times with no problem. She ended up with several large hives on her back. Everytime she cried, the tears would run down on her face and she would get hives there--very weird. It lasted about a week, although the doctor told us it could last for about 2 weeks. She didn't take anything to counteract it because it didn't bother her that much.

My son recently reacted to Bactrim. He got hives on the inside of his forearms and tad bit above the elbow. They didn't itch all that bad (but he is always on Zyrtec anyway). They lasted about a week also.

Augmentin is a combo of Amoxicillin and Clavulanate. So if you're allergic to Penicillin you need to avoid Augmentin.

My DD19 took Augmentin off and on for nearly a year when she was having near constant ear infections. Then one day she broke out from head to toe with lips, eyes, and ears swollen about 5 minutes after her dose. Needlesss to say, that was her LAST dose of Augmentin(or any other kind of penicillin.)

Both of my younger kids are allergic to penicillin, Zithromax, and Keflex. They usually take Bactrim/Septra when they have to take antibiotics.

Sounds like an antibiotic allergy to me. We usually see the pt get it around day 8 of treatment.

You will not be able to take any antibiotics in the cillin family.

If it where me, I would take a dose of Benadryl.

Hope you feel better soon!!!

Because augmentin is a combo of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid, it's hard to say which med you are actually allergic to. If you've taken amoxicillin in the past and haven't had any problems, I would bet its the clav acid that caused the problem. Only way to know for sure is to take plain amoxicillin and see if you break out again

My daughter is allergic to the "cillins". We found out after a 2nd dose of augementin. She broke out in hives for close to 3 months after her last dose. The allergist said it can take months for antibiotics to fully leave the body.

My kids are not "allergic" to any other "cillin" but they can't take augmentin. Even then it's really an intolerance - they start to vomit almost immediately upon taking it. I'm told by the ped that augmentin is one of the more common drugs to have a reaction to. So definitely stop taking immediately but call your dr. and see what they think - as PP mentioned it may not be the amoxicillin but the other drug that's in augmentin that you can't tolerate.

All 3 of my kids are allergic to the cillin family.

All 3 of them have had various types of reactions from vomiting to hives. DS#1 was the most mysterious when his symptoms didn't show up until after he finished 10 days of Amox. On day 10 1/2 he broke out in full head to toe angry red hives.

I developed an allergy just a few years ago. Hives. Can't take amox. or penicillin.

I am allergic to Penecillin(or amoxicillin). I passed it on the two out of four of my kids. Zithromax is slightly related and can react in some people. I am allergic to almost ALL anti-biotics. If I got a serious infection, I would be doomed. However, I am have a goofy over-active immune system. It is not too common. The itching goes away pretty soon, but I feel for you. It is enough to drive you INSANE.

OMG - I almost died from Augmentin 30 years ago. I was hospitalized for two weeks (after stopping it) and got worse for 10 of those days. I am not exaggerating about the almost dying part.
