Allergic kids

We cruised in February. DS is allergic to milk and nuts. I filled out the form and faxed it in before boarding. I've experienced the Disney treatment at WDW regarding the allergy issues in restaurants but I've never seen anything like the treatment we got on the ship. The crew went above and beyond all expectations. On our Castaway Cay day the head server had the chef prepare a special meal to be served only to DS on the island. On our last night the chef made DS his very own, very first chocolate cake and escargot. It actually brought tears to my eyes to see DS dig into a "chocolate" dessert.

One of our Tear Moments too... Our Head Server, had the cheft prepare an egg free, milk free cake for my birthday. It was so wonderful I seriously got so choked up, I could not eat it until after we got back to the room. It was the first real cake that I have ever shared in with my daughter; that I did not have to make. Yes, we have had cake before (but I am always the one who had to bake it) and to have one that we could share, that looked beautiful and taste unlike any you could imagine, was the BEST birthday gift I have ever had...:love: Thank you Fritz... You really do go over and beyond exspectations.... LUV YA BUNCHES!

To the OP; remember we can chat a bit locally too to help her out. I know you will be the middle man, but it is possible. Since I have the EXACT food occurance and we are vet DCLers. If they come to visit you this summer, give me a jingle and we can get together. Tell her you have a "safe house" for them to play...

And THOSE are the moments that keep WDW and DCL in business! We've each had our special times when a CM went way beyond the "necessary to do the job" level. Hope you said something on your comment card or wrote to DCL after the fact--guest recognition strongly influences promotions, perks, etc. It can result in anything from an extra few hours off while in port to being the deciding factor in a promotion or raise.

Actually, I did both. Additionally, our head server exchanged email addresses with DS so they could stay in touch.

Two DCL cruises with my peanut allergic daughter and they were both excellent experiences. Last cruise the chef IMO went way beyond what I'd ever expect. LOVED him. :thumbsup2

Two of the kids I would potentially be cruising with have severe allergies to milk, eggs, and all nuts. One reason we have been looking at a WDW vacation is because we know how accommodating the restaurants are for allergies. Dose this carry over to the DCL? They normally cannot go out to eat at all, so this would be a big deal. Thanks.

We have a DD7 who currently has terrible food allergies. When we went on our Mexican Riviera Disney Cruise July 2008, I faxed a Medical Form to the Corporate Office. To my surprise at the dinner service, Emery was served food that were catered to her needs. Our waiter, Katarina was amazing. The chef was, too. They made anything for our DD7.

I can empathize especially when you are off the ship. We travel to places where I know that she can eat something and not die from it. She has an epi-pen, Jr. for her milk and dairy allergies. She carries two types of inhalers just in case of an onset of an asthma attack. She also has in a her bag cream for when she gets terrible oozing hives from eating the other products.

We are traveling on the Med Aug. 2010 cruise and I know that all the places to take her to eat. I have translated all the allergies to the languages of the area. I even called my insurance company ahead of time to find out the appropriate facility to take her just in case situations. I also purchased a travel insurance to cover any "air" or "sea" transportation.

So, if you have other questions, I would be happy to answer them.

We are not sure which cruise we are going on next. Probably one of the 5 nights next summer. The only one that fits with our schedule is the double dip. So, the only other place that puts us is Nassau besides CC. Last summer we stayed on our Atlantis excursion all day. (we weren't aware of his allergy at that time) We would like to do the same next time too. I would like to just pack him a sandwich to take with us. I"m not sure how easy that is on DCL. At WDW this February, he couldn't have ANY of the bread the entire time we were there. They use too many grains and seeds & nuts in the bread and most places don't have a designated baking area for non-peanut items. Every restaurant we went to we were told he can't have the bread.....including the hamburger buns!! This drove me nuts. (no pun intended)

Also, he ended up having a reaction at 50's primetime cafe' because there was chick pea flour used to make the elbow macaroni in the pasta dish he ordered. The Chef missed that one. (he is also allergic to pea's) It makes me very nervous to trust someone to make DS a sandwich for us to leave the ship with. We do have an epi-pen but Nassau just doesn't seem like the place I want to have a trip to the hospital.

Anyway, I wonder if a pack of ham will stay good for 5 days in an ice chest????

I requested a refrigerator and it was in our stateroom because of DD7's allergies. We kept all her rice dream products and meats in it. I would recommend bringing an ice chest of the items for your DS' sandwich. They will accommodate it. Bring sandwich bags, too. They will allow you to take a sandwich off the boat. The ham will keep nicely in the fridge.

Also, remember to list any products related to his allergies. I would just spell it out (e.g. hominy, chick peas, etc.). As a mom of a highly allergic child, I cannot assume that everyone knows that DD7 is allergic. My list which I faxed to the corporate office was three pages long. I even wrote out all the scenarios. Just making sure that they are aware of the gravity of her food allergies. By the way, I am highly allergic to nuts even sesame seed buns. I just stay away from bread completely.

Thank you so much for that info!!! Yes, last time we told the Chef's "legumes" such as pea's, peanuts, etc. I will get more specific this time but the Chef at Kona (a few nights later) told us just to make sure we say "legumes". I don't really trust that, though. I've had many people including Chef's look at me funny when I say that. You are right,it is better to be EXTREMELY specific.

I'm going to give DCL a call or email and see if we would be able to get a refrigerator. I want to make sure of everything before I book. I'm planning on talking to DH about this cruise in 2011 during our drive home from WDW in 2 weeks. :rotfl: I need to have all of my info ready and correct if I'm going to persuade him. ;)
