All Right Ladies Need Your Help Here

But without the princess dresses and tierras, a 6 year old would look ridiculous walking around wearing a bunch of makeup. Kind of Jon Benet Ramsey-ish.

If the OP wants to have a party for her troop outside of a scout meeting and do this activity, I say yeah, sounds like fun. It's just not something I would expect to happen at a brownie meeting. Teach the kids this age to love their inner-selves, not their outer-selves.

Just have to make the point that you can still love your inner-self and get facials, manicures, wear make-up, etc.....that's what's so great about being a girl.:)

And I say not necessary for 6-8 year olds. To each his own.

Wow totally didn't expect the reactions I got.

I think MOST of the negative reactions are not realizing that we've been in this troop for 2 years, I have volunteered my own time and money to keep this troop going. We have done science, cooking, sewing, enivornmental, go green, nature, manners, recycling, dances, field trips, pottery, we have collected coats for kids, soaps and shampoos for the local womens shelter, pet food for the local SPCA, food for the local food pantry. THIS is what Girl Scouts is about.

1 FUN party does not diminish what I have already taught these girls....Geez

Wow strong feelings about what is the RIGHT way to have a meeting for girl scouts

Girl Scouts has always been presented to me (as a leader for 7+ years now) what you make it.

My girls do TONS of community service BUT that doesn't mean that sometimes we don't just endulge the girls and have a ME meeting. Perhaps that is why my girls are still happy being together after all these years and still in scouts :rolleyes1

When my girls were younger we did really focus ALOT on badges & try its but I have to say that they didn't always enjoy all the WORK aspect involved in those awards. (in hind sight I wish we did more of the fun back then, they grow up so fast and can have a lifetime of good works, it's nice to just make someone feel really special and that's sooooo easy to do when they are little girls)

My .02 cents I think it's okay to embrace beauty both on the inside and out. It's a part of life for these girls can't keep them in a bubble forever

Thank you :) We have had countless meetings over the last two years and we've covered it all. I just thought it would be nice to have 1 laid back meeting.

:confused3
I am thinking that perhaps it could be geared more towards community service....making cards for military..collecting pinecones and decorating to donate.....visiting a veterans/senior home to sing....I am not judging here, but while I was a den leader and then a Pack leader for Scouts, we really tried to focus on the "service" aspects heavily and though we had lots of fun projects and experiences especially thru our events division (overnight at museum, Globetrotters, Circus, Car races, canoe trip, basball trip etc etc) , the real thrust of our meetings wereas community and learning............guess I just am missing something here....is this what little Brownies do??? SPA/nails....do you bring in a nurse or use it as a "teaching" experience????? Actually TWO of my cubs are on their way to EAGLE scouts and I am thrilled for them......such a great group of boys.....now in HS!
Again, Just another view, I guess.....:confused3

You are thinking this is our only focus. See my other posts, I've done community service with the girls, taken up donations, taught them many different things that had nothing to do with beauty.

It sound like something my DD would have loved at the age. But I WOULD NOT put anything on the faces, other than maybe telling them about sunscreen importance. My DD was so sensitive, anytime they played with facial things at other's homes, she came home with a a bunch of red bumps and rashes and her face. The mani/pedi is cute. Maybe do something Christmasy-red and green stripes or polka dots on nails. Maybe green (girl scout) color polish. Get some of the reindeer headbands from the dollar store and a hairbrush for each-a good time to talk about not sharing brushes and hair bows to avoid lice. Some little scented hand sanitizers-I bet you could find a peppermint scent at holiday time.

Maybe you could pair it with a support the women in the military type of a project-to let the girls see women are in the military and they like to feel pretty and smell good too. Maybe pack some nice hand gel and lip balm, hand lotion and such for the women serving the country. That is only IF you want to pair it with a service opportunity. Just a day for your girls is ok too!

Disclaimer: I don't have kids, but I was a Girl Scout. ;)

If you do do the manicure station, I would just put a clear coat on the girls' nails - no funky colors or the like. My mom would've been slightly upset if I came out of our troop meeting with sparkly pink polish. She had this big thing about beauty products and bad female influences (Barbies were strongly discouraged), but she was ok with the minimalist thing.

Heck, I don't think we had nail polish remover in the house until I was a teenager and started doing my own nails. :lmao:

Just my two cents! :goodvibes

I am the co-leader for DDs' first year Junior Troop. We would not have had an event like this at a meeting.

There is a try-it regarding hygiene - hand washing, teeth brushing, learn about health from a professional - that the girls really enjoyed.

I think if you want to do a spa party like this, it would be better to have it as a personal event, not a GS-sanctioned one.

Be careful about the paraffin wax. That stuff gets pretty hot, and I would be concerned about burning their tender skin.

While I agree that it wouldn't hurt or "scar anyone for life", this isn't really what Brownies is all about. I was a Brownie leader and wouldn't do this with our troop. Why not do a service project instead? Brownies is about learning about yourself and helping others-not self indulgence. Great birthday party idea-not so great for Brownies.

Alright now I'm thinking I'll have to come up with something else. Thanks for the suggestions though!

this is why I got out of Girls scouts, too many up tight people and not enough fun. OP, as long as you have been doing community service, which you state you have, I see nothing wrong with a little pampering. As one pp stated you may want to leave the face alone due to so many sensitivities,(I have them also) but the others sound great to me.

When my youngest was in Brownies they had a day when they went to a beauty school. The girls had so much fun! They got their hair styled (mainly braids or curled with the iron) and then got their nails done...the moms all thought it was a lot of fun for them too. I am just not the type to read all kinds of gloom and doom into letting the kids have a bit of fun now and then...just because they were allowed to do nail polish and have their hair done did not turn all the little 6-7 year olds into girls totally obsessed with their looks. My daughter came home with every nail a different color..it was pretty funny. There was no facials or full manicures though.

Dd13 quit GS's in 5th grade, because, according to her, the meetings were SO BORING! I still remember when she came home after the hygiene meeting. :rotfl2: She would've loved the whole spa thing - all of my girls have had mani-pedi's before kindergarten (we live in the land of nail salons). I'd say go for it! :thumbsup2
