hi all,
On my last trip i took over 200 pics.i was thrilled i got some real good shots.got home and only 18 pics are there the rest are gone from my dig camera.i figure it was a bad memory card, but some told me that the airport screening security x-ray machine might have done it.so do i toss the memory card away or could it have been the x-ray machine.btw all these pics that were lost were on one card, the other one i had did not lose any pics.

But for future reference, I try to put all my pics on a cd, before I go thru the airport, or any kind of machine that might mess with my digital pics

Airport screening machines can NOT erase digital images. That's a common misconception. They may damage film, but not memory cards.

The previous poster is correct. The airport scanners do not hurt your memory cards. If you haven't done anything with that memory card there is software that can attempt to recover your images. Lexar makes a good one and there is some free software on the Internet that can help.

This is another reason why you should put your images on several cards when taking pictures. That way if something happens to a memory card you haven't lost all your shots.

I just bought a new sd card and the packaging had a website and an 800 # to call if you ever lost your pics. I didn't read it all the way thru but it sounds like the pics are still on the card somewhere and can be recovered. I think they have a program you can download for a fee. It was a scandisk card I bought.

I know the x-ray machine ruined my boyfriends laptop. they kept running it through the machine oevr and over and even stopped it for whatever reason and when we got home it wouldn't boot up. It was a pretty new laptop too.

I doubt the scanner is what ruined the laptop. Mine has been scanned many many times with no problems.

The most common cause of lost photos on memory cards is recording over them. On my camera, I can inadvertently erase all the photos with just four clicks. The next-most common cause is a defect in the memory card itself, either a manufacturing defect, or a defect attributed to age or use.

Our laptap was also thru the security scanners several times and we've never had a problem with it.

My wife dropped her digital camera during our honeymoon and we thought she lost all of the photos we took, we couldn't see any of the photos we took while looking at the camery. However, when her dad went and hooked up the camera to the computer all of the photos were still there and they downloaded with out a problem. So, if you can't find the photos while looking at the cameral, try hooking it up to a computer. It worked for us.
