Hi all! We're trying to decide on Alaskan excursions, but so many of them look amazing. It is DH (39), me (38), and our DD (11). I'd love to hear about some of your favorite excursions.

Thanks!

The answer depends a lot on your family and your tastes.

For my son and I, the steam train in Skagway was a no-brainer "must do," and it was one of my favorite days ever. Others complain that the train is boring. Different strokes for different folks.

So, yes, a lot of them look amazing, and probably are. What ones catch your eye? Maybe ask about specific ones and see what people have to say.

Our Skagway excursion was our favorite. We booked the Yukon Bus and Rail with Dog Cart Experience with Chilkoot Charters. Bus (seats 24) up to the Yukon, White Pass and Yukon Railway back. Plenty of picture stops with the bus, a short stop in Carcross, and a longer stop at Caribou Crossing Trading Post for the included BBQ chicken lunch, wildlife museum, puppies!, petting farm type animals. We added on the Dog Cart Ride--15 minute ride on a dirt path, pulled by Iditarod dogs. It's a 7 1/2 hr. excursion. It cost $219/adult, $159/child 12 and under. Worth every penny! We loved the dog cart ride and our tour guide was fantastic! I enjoyed the scenic train ride back, there is a person narrating the ride on the speaker system. This was great combo of things to do, especially as I really didn't need a round trip train ride.

We did the same Skagway excursion as Geomom (as it happens, we were on the same bus/train car!) and it was fantastic. I think it was DH's favorite excursion. We also had a great time in Juneau. We did Mendenhall Glacier on our own (rented a car) and then had a private whale watching trip in the afternoon, which was a highlight for me. In Ketchikan we did sea kayaking which was also great. That was DD's (8 years old) favorite thing, actually. It's funny, we couldn't do the Disney kayaking excursion because their minimum age is 10 so we did that one private as well.

Here's a HUGE thread of excursion reviews for Alaska that I went through a lot. http://www.disboards.com/threads/alaska-excursions-post-your-reviews-here.2723087/

I also read tons of trip reports and looked at a lot of photos to get ideas about what we wanted to do. It's dizzying! If I had it to do over again, with our three ports, I wouldn't change a thing! If you want more details and photos from our trip, my trip report is in my signature.

We had three awesome excursions - all private - whale watching in Juneau, we did the above excursion in Skagway, and float plane in Ketchikan. All three were very different, but equally fantastic.
