Alarm Clocks

We stayed at a hotel last spring where the lamps had several usb ports on them for charging. (two lamps) I thought that was a good idea.

Yes there was an alarm clock LOL!

Not to beat a dead horse on this one, but yes you can. There are loads of apps that duplicate clocks. A large, clear display that displays all night long. Just like a clock, maybe even bigger and clearer. No fumbling or picking up the device. Wake up, glance at tablet/phone, see time, go back to sleep.
So I have to download an app, prop up the device somehow, and keep a $200 device running all night, to replace a $1.50 clock. Great.
I have been bringing a little clock I received for free in a promotion. Or I keep my watch (yes, I still wear one) on the nightstand. Makes more sense to me.

I am 52 years old. I never recall running out of room in my nightstand.
If I did I would get rid of my lamp. It's the largest item and after all, I have a flashlight built into my phone.

Really, perhaps you have never stayed in a BLT studio? Perhaps you only read with tablet since you don't need a light. Personally I want the lamp.

Someone should do a poll of what age people are who think hotels should keep alarm clocks.

36 and under = 99.2% no alarm clocks
37 - 59 = 33.66% keep alarm clocks
60 and up = What? They removed sundials from the rooms?

I voted for getting rid of the alarm clocks because I prefer to use my phone and I am over 60. And we are not a rare breed.

Thread summary: They may or may not be gone. Some people really want them. Some people really don't. Both groups think the other camp is just wrong and should get with the program. No one's mind has been changed by this discussion.

Personally I don't care one way or another but I'll point out the cost is more than just the discounted cost of the clock itself but also there is a cost to those that call and complain or to have to store and deliver them. I think it's reasonable for DVC to remove them with or without having them to deliver but I also think it's reasonable to keep them. I do think it funny that in 2016 with all the options available, that people would dig their heels in on this issue. I'd bet I can predict the general responses in a work environment from a computer upgrade or phone system change for most of those who have participated in these alarm clock threads, LOL.

It's not that one cannot find what time it is without a clock, but why not make it easy so I just just glance and look vs pull out my phone and fumble?

If you set up your "device" on the night table before bed, all you really did is set up an alarm clock.

For me, at least while on vacation, it's more about having an easy to read clock in the room and not necessarily the alarm.

As I implied, I don't see where it has to be a big deal either way. Personally I think the best choice going forward is to have them for delivery until they're gone then not to have them but I think all 3 variations are reasonable for now. The chances of someone not having a reasonable option without a clock in the room is close to zero but it may not be the preferred option.

Oh I agree, if you have a guest that really wants one, bring one up to the room. I did contact DVC yesterday I was told a both of my resorts (we are doing a split stay) the alarm clocks have been removed BUT I can request one for the room. Darn skippy I will!

BTW the DVD players have not been removed. DD is very happy. She borrowed a movie every night on our last stay. :D

As I understand it - they are not in the studios that they have added the murphy bed. The larger villas it seems to be a little mixed on the reports but they may still be there. It wasn't a resort wide removal like the alarm clocks were.

Really?? I'm calling BS. I that many years you glanced at the clock twice??

MG

Let me stand corrected I have NOT used the ALARM on the clock twice. Really BS, is that necessary? With that said I typically look at my watch (if wearing one), or my phone, out of habit. I probably looked at the time on the TV and microwave or range if there was one. Usually I just ask my wife are you ready and she says "in 5 minutes". As far as the middle of the night I really don't care (Besides if you are a male over the age 50 you probably can guess what time it is as you stumble to the bathroom :rolleyes1 since its a nightly occasion!)

Haha - I had almost posted a similar link yesterday! :thumbsup2
:D

My very favorite timeshare of all time reconnected me with horses and the horsey-life. For the record, the rooms there did not have alarm clocks, or TVs, or radios or cellphone coverage ... but they did have large, woodburning fireplaces made of stone (think "VWL-worthy fireplace ... in your unit"). I miss the timeshare ... but kept the horses and the horsey-lifestyle.

I just read a review on tripadvisor of AKL. The reviewer complained that there was no clock in the room. So it's not just DVCers who notice these things.

I don't get it, a digital alarm clock is less than $10. What is DVC saving? How cheep can they get?

Wont argue the importance of a clock, seems to be split among posts. Seeing how Disney decisions are usually far reaching and eventually encompass all the resorts, DVC has around 4000 rooms and if they carry it over to all WDW resorts that number is over 30,000 rooms at $10. each it adds up, for an item that is by most standards becoming obsolete. I can see the phones disappearing in the not to distant future as well. All my contact with Disney is through my I phone apps or text. Also some of the rooms 2bedroom, villas etc may have 3-4 clocks and phones, this is no small expense.
