I just booked with Alamo for a car rental out of HOU. I see an option to add an additional driver for $10.99 per day. Is the additional driver fee no longer waived when using Insiders Club?

I want to go directly to the aisle skipping the counter which it says I can do on the reservation but I want to add myself as an additional driver.

Do I have to go to the counter to do this? Call in? Add the additional driver in the $10.99 per day field and hope they don't charge the fee?

Thanks for any help!

Unless you booked it using your Insiders Contract ID on the reservation, then you will have to go to the counter to add the driver for free. The free driver is driven from the contract ID. If you used another contact ID that doesn't allow the free driver, then it won't allow you to add it online in SaveTime or at the Kiosk.

Thanks! I used the Costco ID. We'll decide when we see the counter lines if it's worth waiting to add an addional driver!

Borrowing from this post. We rented from Alamo in Miami using my husband's Insiders account. Went online today to do online check-in and I don't see anywhere that lists a free second driver. When completing the check in, there was an option to pay $9.99 to add an additional driver. It isn't worth paying to list me as a driver but we would do so if it is free. Any thoughts?

The Costco ID should allow you to add the additional driver online with SaveTime. It may show a fee, but when added, it will show $0.00 in the actual column that calculates in to the final price.

Can i ask what the costco id is? Is it something available to costco members? My friend and i booked a car with alamo in her name. She has a costco membership, but i dont.

You cannot add an additional driver online. You can do it at the kiosk, the counter or at the exit booth. All drivers on the contract must be present and present a valid driver's license.
From the Alamo site, listed on the face of the reservation under the tab: Rental Policies. Additional Driver

· All additional drivers must meet all rental requirements.
· Additional drivers must appear at the rental counter with the primary renter.
· Additional drivers must sign the rental agreement.
· An additional daily fee may apply for any Additional Drivers.

The additional driver can only be added to the contract at the pick up location.

Note: State law in California, Illinois, Missouri, Nevada, Oregon, and Wisconsin allow the spouse to be an automatic authorized driver as long as renter requirements are met.

Under the terms and conditions: See # 2.
C. Alamo Insider Program Benefits

As a benefit of enrollment in the Program

1. Access to exclusive membership deals.

2. Members will not incur an additional fee if the rental vehicle is driven by an "Additional Authorized Driver" as defined in the rental agreement

3. Members may choose to earn frequent flyer miles from one of the many Alamo airline partners (each a "Frequent Flyer Program"). In the event that you enroll in a Frequent Flyer Program, you hereby authorize Alamo to collect a Frequent Flyer Program charge to recover all or a portion of the administrative and program costs associated with your participation in the applicable Frequent Flyer Program. You acknowledge and agree that you may also be subject to additional restrictions, charges, and rules imposed by each airline's own Frequent Flyer Program rules. A list of the Frequent Flyer Program charges collected by Alamo is available at www.alamo.com. The service charge may be in addition to any other fees or charges the airline may impose in connection with your use or redemption of any earned miles. You are solely responsible for understanding and complying with the rules, restrictions or terms and conditions imposed by an airline in connection with such airline's Frequent Flyer Program.

I don't think you can add a driver online, it has to be done at a kiosk, counter or at the exit booth. This is of course, unless something has changed recently.

Costco has a program for discounts on auto rental. The ID is actually the rental rate code. The person renting the car is supposed to be a Costco member, but, if the code allows an additional driver, the additional driver does not have to be a Costco member.

This must have changed with the change to the website. I know in the past that I have added the extra driver during the SaveTime process.

Not everyone is included as a free drive with Alamo insider. They have to be a spouse/common law spouse/domestic partner with the same address on their license and the renter. Also, mother/father/son/daughter/brother/sister that have the same license address. We ran into this in Jan. when we rented through Alamo and they would not let my daughter be the extra driver for free since she lives on her own. Not sure about the Costco code but we are members of BJs and we used their discount/coupon and were able to check-in online and were able to do both driver's info at that time and then just went to the garage and showed licenses at the exit booth.

If you want to PM me your reservation number I can look it up to see if it's charging it for sure. If you don't have that, just give me a Name/Time of pickup and the airport. I manage a National and Alamo so I can find out no problem.

Basically additional drivers can be anyone who qualifies to rent a car in the first place (over 25 with a license and credit card) and they won't charge you an additional fee if you're an insider member. I don't believe the coupon code interferes with that, but I can check.

If you're not insiders, then it's anyone who is either a spouse or on your insurance policy and of age ONLY. Anyone else needs to be added on, qualify, and it's a $10/day fee

Also you can put the person's name down online, but that's kind of useless because they need to be with you anyway at the time of rental so they can put down that person's license info. I would assume it's done just for price quotes for anyone who is not an insider and has to pay the fee.

the costco travel site for alamo says in the fine print that one additional driver is free that meets the additional driver requirements. The requirements seem to be age 25 and would have been able to rent the car myself in my name. We are renting in my friends name because she has the costco membership. I hope we get it free because we are renting for 14 days. It doesnt mention anything about being a spouse.

That is not correct. As an Insider member an additional driver is free as long as they qualify. Not sure how old your daughter is, but, if she was under 25 she would have to pay the underage driver fee. Over 25, she should have been able to drive without charge. Are you, perhaps, confusing National's additional drivers rules? They are exactly what you just described.
From the Alamo website's FAQ's regarding additional drivers.

Additional Driver Fee / Alamo

Is there always an additional driver daily fee? How much is it?

Any additional driver (including a spouse or domestic partner) will pay a daily fee of approximately $10 per day.

Fees are waived for additional drivers who are:

· Members of Alamo Insiders Program; which allows for one additional driver to be added at no cost.
· Corporate Contracts in the United States are allowed the following additional drivers at no charge:

· Commercial (corporate) rentals

· The renter's business partner

· Employer or fellow associate, who has a signed corporate contract with Alamo and drives the car for business purposes and who meet normal renter requirements.

All other additional authorized driver situations are subject to a daily charge.

An additional driver may only be added to the contract at a rental location and may be added or removed in the middle of the contract. When adding an additional driver in the middle of the contract both the renter and the additional driver must be present at the location.

The system will calculate the charges based on the dates the additional driver was listed on the rental.

Here is Sunny FL, if you are not an Insider Member, your spouse pays the additional fee. Just like it says on the Alamo web site.

^^Thats true it does say it on the Alamo website, but I would call the branch you're renting from because it says the same thing for my location in CT. However, we have regional guidelines in place that allow spouses to drive free of charge. So if they do have a regional policy that says the same thing, you might be in luck in that specific case.

I worked for National/Alamo in Orlando, we charged for spouses at Alamo unless they were Insider members.
