Alabama DVCers? -- Got 15?

Hello Alabama DVC-ers!

I just joined disboards a couple of days ago, took me a while to find this thread! We went to WDW twice last year and the last trip to BCV convinced us DVC was for us! Dh is from Sheffield, I am from Greenville, we lived in Montgomery for years, and moved to Mobile in 2000.

Look forward to getting to know you guys!

BamaEd1 you have been added to the list of Montgomery people and Atpatt you have been added to the Mobile/Gulf Coast area. BTW, have you been to Shur-field lately? I'm going to be there Saturday.

Please feel free to go to page 1 and look up the Disney people in your area.
There are beginning to be a lot of us on this page.

Should we start thinking about an Alabama DVC meet? :grouphug:
Just a thought. I'm not really in the mood to organize right now.

My wife and I are heading to the world in about 20 hours for our first kidless trip. We are going for a short studio stay at VWL, an early 25th anniversary present to ourselves. Adding to the route entries, we live about 5 minutes from I-20 and Oxford is only about 30 miles from the Georgia line, so we go I-20 to the 285 bypass in ATL then take 75 south to the Florida Turnpike and take 429 into the world. A normal paced trip is about 9 hours.

Checking in from Auburn here. We always go through Columbus to Albany and Tifton. We catch I75 there and take it the rest of the way to the Turnpike.

How long does it take you when you go 231 to I10 and then down from Montgomery? We get there in about 8 1/2 hours.

We can make it on the same route from Chelsea in 8 1/2 hours. I think that it only took us about 7 hours to get back to Opelika on our last trip...

Basically, it takes about 4 1/2 hours from Chelsea to Tifton and about 4 hours from Tifton to WDW. One thing we've found that greatly helps our time is by taking the 80/185 bypass in Phenix City/Columbus...

We kind of poke around. Traveling with a 12 year old who likes to "explore" makes things slower. ("Can we stop in Gainesville and see the stadium?" and so on.) But you're right 8 1/2 hours is a long estimate. We usually make it faster than that.

well it take me around 9 hours from birmingham - so 8 1/2 hours from auburn definitely seems long. :cool1:

FYI, for those Alabama fans on board, here is the fish extender we made for our recent cruise...

What are fish extenders? What is the purpose?

That is cute!
Do you see the fish on the top? That is the DCL "fish" that hangs outside your door. I think that they use to put messages, etc. in them. Anyways, we found out that a big thing to do with DIS board members is to set up a cruise meet so that you can meet your fellow DIS'ers. At this meeting, you exchange bags with fellow DIS'ers. This is called a bag exchange. You put stuff from your part of the country in there, then you swap bags at the meet. Our bag from AL on our recent cruise held the following all-important items:

Jar of Dreamland BBQ sauce
Jar of Big Bob Gibson's White BBQ sauce
Bag of Golden Flake Chips
John's Cole Slaw Dressing
University of Alabama Christmas Ornament
BAMA Grape Jelly
Bud's Best Cookies
Dale's Marinade
Alabama Shot Glass
Pilliterri's Marinade
Whistle Stop Cafe Fried Green Tomato batter

We ended up with a similar bag from Ohio. Many will also have made what are called "Fish Extenders", which are pockets that hang down or "extend" from the fish. Throughout the rest of the week, you put little gifts and treats in the fish extenders of fellow DIS'ers and they do the same to you. It was really a lot of fun.

I wonder where your bag ended up, and what in the world did they think about all of that.

By the way, I would have personally went with Blackberry jam over grape.

It all sounded delish!

Wife and I live in Fairhope, Alabama, and we are seriously considering a purchase - probably at SSR - this summer. Did a grandgathering with the kids and grandkids just after T'giving, and going back in April with one or two of the older grandkids. (Older is relative - they are 3!)

Not a DVC owner (YET!!!) but this thread is making me homesick!

DH is from Russellville, I'm from Florence, we both graduated from UNA and lived in Huntsville for a while before we lost our minds and moved to Memphis. All of our family is still in the Shoals area, and we're desperately wanting to get back there.

We're staying at SSR this fall to give it a 'test run,' although DH wants to hold out for KT to go on sale.

P.S. ROLL TIDE!!!!

Hi MScott,

We have a lot in common (except the Roll Tide part):sad2:
DH grew up in Savannah, TN (1hr north of Florence). We lived in Memphis for years and finally said "Enough!":scared1: We have been back in Shoals for almost 7 years :thumbsup2 . We're trying out DVC at Boardwalk Studio in April (almost to the 30 day mark!:cool1:) and are so excited to have Boardwalk view too :woohoo:
