Al Gore uses 20 TIMES as much electricity as you do

just out of curiosity, how much does a carbon offset cost?

Could I buy one and then crank my furnace up a litte?

Well, maybe not 20x yours. Please, forgive my poetic reference to Gore's usage compared with the national average. Feel free to do the math to see how much more than you he actually uses.

Just replying to the threads title...:cool1:

About 5x times more, thank you for asking.

So Gore does use all that power but compensates for it by purchasing "carbon offsets"??

Must be good to be rich and able to do that. Most regular Joe's can't.

Um, isn't that why he WOULD purchase the offsets, because he acknowledges that he uses a lot of energy and therefore tries to "offset" it. Most regular joes don't need to purchase offsets because they don't use the levels you people are complaining that Gore uses.

I really think that he could lay down and die and you people would somehow fault him for that. He can't win with you people, in other words. It makes no difference what he does. And I'm sure he knows it.

I find it fascinating that the hot topic on these boards reflects whatever rush or hannity are talking about on the radio that day.

That statement applies just the same to GWB. I guess they are both polarizing figures.

I've been doing this same offset thing for years and I didn't even know the good I was doing!!

See I purchase a certain hops mixture and consume it. In turn, I eliminate a like amount to replace what I have purchased and consumed.

Even Steven!!

There are some that might say my consumption is a bit excessive. But now I have the perfect retort! Hops offsets..... I like that.

I suppose but TheDoctor's response attempts to make the Drudge report out to be false. Which apparently it isn't.

But Al wants the regular Joe's to attempt to have no "carbon footprint". That's still a mighty task for those with just moderate incomes. I doubt there're are many DISers that could eliminate (or severly reduce) their carbon footprint. Heck, how much would carbon offsets cost to wipe out a trip to WDW?

His house is proabably 20x bigger than mine....that might explain the extra energy use!!!

FWIW, I don't listen to either. (Well, maybe Rush once in a while if the sports talk station is dull) Does that exclude me from the "you people" group you speak of?

20-room, eight-bathroom(not including the guest house...

I guess Drudge really expected him to live in an averaged sized house.

How many trees do you suppose big al has to plant just to cover his Nashville home's energy consumption???

Now lets consider his other homes, his private jet travels, limos, etc.

Wow.....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_offset

Costs

While the benefits of tree-planting are subject to complexities, the costs are low compared to many other mitigation options. The IPCC has concluded that "The mitigation costs through forestry can be quite modest (US$0.1–US$20 / metric ton carbon dioxide) in some tropical developing countries.... The costs of biological mitigation, therefore, are low compared to those of many other alternative measures".[4] The cost effectiveness of tropical reforestation is due not only to growth rate, but also to farmers from tropical developing countries who voluntarily plant and nurture tree species which can improve the productivity of their lands.[9] As little as US$90 will plant 900 trees, enough to annually remove as much carbon dioxide as is annually generated by the fossil-fuel usage of an average United States resident

I think big al's being dishonest to the american people..

What a double standard. Usually you and the rest of the conservatives are all in favor of special privileges for the rich and wealthy including tax cuts for Paris Hilton (the proposed abolishment of the estate tax). Here Vice President Gore is doing what he can to offset his carbon footprint and you are complaining that he is misusing his wealth because he is doing what is right and that regular joes can do so. Regular joes also never have to pay estate taxes and do not get the full benefit of bush's tax cuts for the rich.

Have you looked at the offset calculator? Here is the link http://www.climatecrisis.net/takeaction/carboncalculator/ I calculated my offsets to cost less than $300 per year. http://www.nativeenergy.com/Splash/ClimateCrisis/ClimateCrisis.html?climatecrisis

Does anyone really NEED a house that big, even if you can afford it?

First, his average bill is not 20x as large as mine.

Secondly, his home EMPLOYES 20x more americans than the average home.

Shouldnt that "trickle down"???

It is 17X what I use.

It's burning their ***** that Deadeye Dick isn't going to win any marksmanship prizes and the only prize Bush is ever going to win is the ****y prize.

This is as appropriate in the discussion of algore's personal "footprint" abatement as talking about bill's cigar tricks....

Good call.

What expletives are you trying to get past the filter in violation of board policy??

Nice exaggeration for your purpose, but what I don't appreciate is someone who speaks out of both sides of their mouth. Obviously he's going to have a bigger home and bills than most of us, but the question is whether or not he is practicing what he preaches within that scope.

Would the Crawford horseless, cowless "ranch" count? Or the summer cottage in Kennebunkport?

So, why doesn't he? If he is so concerned, why doesn't he just downsize AND also buy carbon offsets?

I guess he likes 'convenience' just as much as the next guy. Yes, it is hypocritical. No matter how you slice it, it is.

But hey, doesn't really bother me because I am not convinced anyways.

So, enjoy your big ole' houses Al. All the power to ya!

I'm not trying to get past any filter. What you see is the filter, but if you don't believe me, report it to a mod.
