I stayed at AKL during the Christmas season of '03. I didn't get a chance to check out the decorations at POFQ but I thought the ones at AKL were awesome. There was a HUGE tree in the main lobby that had millions of african inspired ornaments on it and there were several other small trees scattered throughout the resort. The parks are so pretty too. We loved MVMCP in the MK, seeing snow on Main St. almost made me cry. I think I'd choose AKL.

Hello! Your little girl is 6 so she is probably in awe of the more traditional Christmas decorations. Animal Kingdom Lodge is African decorations - lots of mask and wooden ornaments. The tree is huge in the lobby but that is about all that is familiar. Meanwhile POR-FQ has about 6 mid-size trees all done in glass ball ornaments of Mardi Gras styles. Beads of garland hang from the trees and Mardi Gras mask are in the wreaths. Your jaw won't drop when you see it but as the days go on you will appreciate the decor.

I've stayed at both and prefer POR-FQ decorations over AKL. Go and visit AKL, eat dinner there and see the huge tree.

I've stayed at both around Christmas time and I agree with the above poster, I'd choose POFQ. The tree is HUGE in AKL's lobby- but that is really all that excited my kids. POFQ has several smaller trees and my kids loved them. If you are basing your decision solely on Christmas decorations- I'd pick POFQ. We actually prefer POFQ over AKL anyway, but that's another thread!

kenziesmom- both are very nice resorts. It depends on what you are looking for in a resort. My family is very park-oriented. We are at the parks at opening and don't return to the hotel until after the night shows- so we spend very little time in the hotel. We got upgraded to AKL savannah view while POFQ was closed a couple of years ago. AKL is a great hotel- but I would never pay regular price for it. The rooms are slightly larger than the ones at POFQ, but the larger bed takes up some of that space. The balcony is nice- especially after the kids are in bed asleep. The animals are very cool and unique. The inside corridors are a plus. Other than that, we just prefer POFQ. AKL is very dark- which I knew before I went. We didn't like the food court- the cooked items seemed to have a different taste to them- I guess 'African'. We had less than desirable service- check-in was an absolute nightmare! The cms working the desk didn't know as much about the hotel as I did- thanks to the dis! We asked for bed rails- which was requested on our reservation- and finally got them at midnight the second night- after many, many calls. I had read that AKL has smaller rooms than most deluxes, but I was still surprised that they were no larger than they are for a deluxe. Noone would help with our luggage- we even offered a bell boy a tip beforehand but he said he was already busy (which was fine, but we couldn't get anyone to help- and a few bell boys were just standing around at the entrance). We just weren't impressed with the service- especially for a deluxe resort. We've stayed at POFQ twice now and have had wonderful service both times. No problems at check-in, if we called and asked for extra towels- they were there very quickly, bed rails were already on the beds as we requested on our ressie. POFQ is also more compact- meaning shorter walks to the bus stop, food court, etc. If you are on the end of a wing at AKL, the walks could be very long to the bus stop and food court. I'm glad we experiened AKL and the savannah view was spectacular, but for my family, it is not worth the extra money. We will definitely return to POFQ!
