Hi Everyone,

We have decided to try the AKL this next trip. We (DH, DS7, DD6, and myself) will be staying the very end of January 2013. Right now I have a standard room booked, but am thinking of upgrading. I have a few questions.

Do any standard rooms have bunk beds?

I will probably book a pool view, and might even go with the BB. I have debated upgrading to a savannah but here is my concern. Since it is the end of January, we will probably only be in our rooms when it is dark. I don't plan to be out too late, but know that it gets dark pretty early this time of year. So my question is, how much of the savannah can you even see if it is dark out? I guess this is what is making me lean to the pool view. I have seen the pool view all lit up at night and it looks like a pretty good view.

Thanks for your insights!

There are some views of the animals when it's dark, but the savannah's aren't lit up. We were able to see some of the animals at night, but of course it's better to see them in daylight. The resort does offer some special viewing at night with night glasses, but I'm not sure the schedules for when they do that with guests. We were lucky and the giraffe's were outside our room one night so we watched them and the zebra that walked by for a bit.

Since bunk bed is a bookable category, I doubt you'll be able to request one with a standard view booking. I guess it's possible though. Bunk beds wasn't always its own category.

I can't speak to the savanna views, but I highly recommend pool view. We did that on our honeymoon, and our view was gorgeous, even at night.

As the PP said, they do night viewing with night vision goggles after dark. I haven't done it myself, but it seems that it's very popular, so it may be hard to get the time you want.

There are tons of public viewing areas around the resorts. Some of which are in their own little alcoves with rocking chairs.
