AKL Standard Room Upgrades

Out of curiosity, how many people on the DIS have booked standard rooms at AKL and received a room upgrade??

In April I booked a standard room with an AP discount and received an upgrade to a Savanna view on Kudu Trail.

June 2011 we were upgraded to Savannah view.

Our family will be visiting for our 5th time in September. We booked a pool view room but in the past we have booked standard. Two times we got upgraded, once to pool view and once to savannah view, the other two just a standard room. Still happy and were glad to be there.

We've been fortunate enough to have been upgraded twice at AKL.

However, may I suggest you book a pool view room? It is just a tad more than a standard view, and at least you won't be looking at the parking lot.

We never count on an upgrade...we're always happy with the view we pay for. Most people don't get the elusive upgrades.

We've been upgraded twice, both years ago, and both with an AP discount staying for about two weeks. I don't know if that gave us any pull, but we figured it did at the time. Good luck to you!

I always book standard and have gotten an upgrade to savana view 100% of the time. I've gotten this 10 times since we started going to this hotel 7 years ago. This has only been during value seasons as I've never attempted it during any other times.

None, have always booked a standard and received a standard. We've not been disappointed any of those times...I love AKL

Book what you really want. Not everyone is lucky to get an upgrade. We were VERY disappointed with our standard-view room there AND AKL.
We have only received ONE free upgrade after many stays (BWI CL).

Booked 2 standard rooms, and got what have to be the 2 absolute worst possible standard rooms.

I went to the desk and asked very nicely if we could move. I actually offered to pay for an upgrade if necessary, and they said if we waited til the next day they'd bump us up to Savannah view at no charge. Ended up with awesome rooms!

It really depends on how booked up the hotel is. If it is soldout, there would not be rooms available for upgrades unless they are intentionally overbooking standard to make it more sellable. They turned the 5th floor into DVC because the hotel rooms were usually not full.

We booked a standard view and recieved an upgarde to a savannah view when we went in late August 2009. I think we were lucky though and would not risk it again. Next time we stay at AKL I will book a savannah view.

I imagine it happens fairly often, there are far more Savannah view rooms than standard at AKL.

That said, as others said, book what you want. Better to be pleasantly surprised than to be really disappointed.

We were (selfishly) wondering this as well. We booked pool view, and wondered if that would ruin our chances of a possible upgrade. We are happy either way, as we really want the pool view this time around.

Last trip I booked a pool view room because I didn't want a parking lot view. I was very happy with it as the view was great and it was close to the buses and lobby. I think I'd do the same thing next time I stay at AK. One thing that I wouldn't be too happy with is one of the rooms all the way at the end.

We booked a pool view twice and both times we received a pool view.

Honestly we LOVE the Pool View rooms - super convienent to everything.
We booked a bounceback for Oct at AKL - had the option to book a savannah room - we booked a Pool View again.

Twice have we reserved standard view and both times upgraded to Savannah view, twice we have booked pool view and both times we got pool view.

We loved the pool view, very convenient location.

We booked a pool view for part of our next trip too, We have 6 nights pool view, 6 nights CL.
Last stay we booked standard view and got upgraded to Sunset Savanna view

Last Easter week, we stayed 2 nights before going to our offsite condo. We booked pool view. I knew chances were slim for an upgrade at that time of year. I asked at checkin and was offered an option to pay for a savanna view upgrade. I declined and stuck with my pool view. They did honor my request of Zebra Trail.
