Hi! I am planning a trip for dd and I for the last week in August. We love to go at this time of year and normally stay at the value resorts. This year I have decided to spurge on our hotel. I am very interested in AKL. DD is an animal lover and I think this would be a great place to stay. My only reservation/concern about this resort is the type of food offered. Both dd and I do not "exotic" food - my family would tell you that means anthing with spice. ;) It is not that bad but pretty close. What is food like at this resort. I know I will be fine my concerns rests with dd who will be six at the time of the trip. I can store fruit, snacks, and such in our room but if she wants more for lunch on our pool afternoon or on return for an early evening from the parks are thier options available for her?

Thanks so much for your help!

Mara (the quick service in the resort) has Chicken Fingers, Mac n cheese, burgers and the like. You can check the menu option by going to allearsnet.com and looking at the dining options at AKL. HTH

AKL has a foodcourt called Mara, which is located right near the pool. It has lots of normal-tasting foods such as chicken strips, pizza, burgers, salads, etc. Their restaurant Boma has many spiced things on their dinner buffet, but their breakfast buffet is basically traditional. In fact it is just excellent ... pancakes, waffles, ham, bacon, pork, eggs, fruit, hot and cold cereals, and a vast assortment of delicious pastries. All fresh and delicious!

You should have no problems. Mara, the snack and grab-and-go eating place, has a variety of kid-friendly (and not spicy) foods like fruit, pudding, sandwiches and cookies. Also, Boma, the buffet restaurant for breakfast and dinner has selections at each meal that are not spicy or oddly flavored, like bacon and scrambled eggs, pancakes, fruit and hot and cold cereals at breakfast and mac and cheese and chicken fingers at dinner. Also a number of the dinner selections are not very spicy at all, perhaps spiced differently than you might be acustomed to, but not spicy, per se.

Thanks so much. I am so excited with even the idea of staying at the AKL. I was just worried that DD would rebel about the food.

DS is way picky - and Mara is still his favorite CS at all of WDW. They also have a lot of reg. food available (not at reg. prices, alas) like Pop-tarts and stuff.

One of my favorite lunches to eat poolside from Mara is a tub of Kalamata olive hummus and a small bag of fried pita chips. Awesome!

I may have to pass on the kalamata and olive hummus :rolleyes1 but it looks like its going to be AKL for us. The place seems fantastic.

My kids (ages 6 & 9) are total chicken fingers & fries or mac & cheese kids - and they LOVED Boma last month - they started with the traditional kids food (plenty of chicken fingers, mac & cheese, fries, etc.) & then ventured on to try some African-spiced flank steak & other non-traditional foods. I couldn't believe it! There wasn't any "hot" spicy food, just a lot of African spices that Americans aren't that used to eating. It was fabulous! Mara has tons of American foods to eat. You could both sign up for the Culinary Tour (3:45 daily at the Jiko podium) - it's free and they let you sample (if you want) some African foods. Try that first if you think you want to try Boma!

Oh - this is a great idea. I did not even know you could take this tour. Thank You! :cheer2:

Mara's is the best "food court" in any resort bar none IMO. Wonderful, fresh, well prepared meals with plenty of options.

You sound exactly like my DM, DS, and I. Anything slightly "odd" or spicy forget about it ;)

You might also consider giving Boma's breakfast a chance. We went there and it was wonderful! Tons of selections that even the pickiest eater could leave stuffed!

This is my DS's favorite resort I am sure you will have a wonderful time!

I am considering this place too - glad I found out about the food court I was confused also.

My DD LOVED Boma. She's got a rather healthy sweet tooth, and her eyes were as big as saucers when she say their dessert selections ;) Now she did manage to eat an acceptable amount of regular food, but I must say there desserts were the best of any buffet we visited.

Well thank you all so much. I have made up my mind it is definately AKL lodge for us. Mind you we normally stay in a value but this time I am treating myself and dd well! It will be at least two years before our next trip and I really want to enjoy this one! (we are very lucky that as a Single mom family we can go so much so please do not take any of my post as whining. I work very hard for dd and I to be able to do this!)
