AKL deluxe concierge room

Hey rich,

Not that I want to see this turn into the dreaded smoking debate - but,

I don't know if you can call it a "myth" when many of us have been told by concierge that there is no smoking on the balconies for the animals.

I would call it a misrepresentation, maybe, but not a myth.

I think they tell smokers one thing and non-smokers something else.

I also heard about all the "No Smoking" signs on the balconies. I smoked on two concierge savanah balconies and looked very carfully on each, there were no signs regarding smoking.

You may just have a point.

I didn't mean to start a debate even though I have time to debate because it's a snow day here!!!:D My kids are REALLY happy.

I'm not going to worry about it too much. I did request non-smoking and I'll see what happens. I just wish they had one policy.

I'm sure we'll have a great time.

I'd love to hear more trip reports from people who are going in the future and how this worked out for them.

VB - I agree with you.

I think if they had a firm smoking policy, it would solve a lot of these debates. I have no problem with set smoking rooms and set non-smoking rooms (including balcony non smoking).

But, this flip flopping and uncertainty is not right. Set a policy and stick to it. I think people would follow the "rules" this way.

If you upgrade to a suite you will pretty much have a haul and a half to the concierge lounge. We were on the third floor, at the VERY end, as far down that hall as you can get. It took about 2-4 minutes depending on the elevator wait to get to the concierge lounge.

Anne,

That doesn't sound to convenient at all. Besides, I kind of like the idea of the older kids being in a different room altogether.

Are you still in the world or are you back.

Obviously there is no policy and they make it up as the guest demands.

If a person suffers from severe smoke allergies obviously with the staff allowing a nonsmoking room to become a smoking room then I would have to consider alternative lodging.

I have no problem with those that need a smoking room, I do have a problem with the staff changing rooms to fit the wants of guests.

I agree there needs to be a clear cut policy. Of course we all know that policies can be made by management and broken by the guest.

When I called to book the suite, CRO actually read me off a little paragraph (that included the "smoking optional" phrase and at the end it said "suites can be quite a distance from the concierge lounge". This actually works out well for us because we need, hopefully, to be in a quiet area. I guess I don't mind the hike to the lounge. I need it. I could start a whole thread about shopping for bathing suits for our upcoming trip to Vero Beach.
:(

My DH said he wants the suite no matter what so I am not going to think about connecting rooms any longer. I keep going back and forth about what would work better for us.

Plus, the shower in the one br suite loooks great.

ducklite,

Is the shower as big as it looks?

The suite we were in was definitely NO SMOKING. There was a no-smoking sign on the door, on the table, and on the balcony's.

The shower was quite large with a fold down bench seat in it, but it was a handicapped room, so I do'nt know if that made a difference.

Just to clarify the "smoking" issues.

From Personal Expierence:

The only smoking optional rooms for concierge are the pool view rooms on the 6th floor. You can request a smoking optional room on the 5th floor but they will be at the far end of the wing and quite a distant walk to the concierge lounge.

There is absolutely NO SMOKING ON THE BALCONIES!. of Savanah view rooms.

We were verbally told this at check - in and also had to sign a paper regarding the do's and don't of the savannah view rooms

There was also a notice on the table in our room and also a sticker on the sliding glass door referencing that no smoking on the balcony.

My husband smokes so we always request a smoking optional room.

We spent May 2002 at AKL 4th floor Savanah view room - Zebra Trail - smokin goptional.

We are going to be AKL Concierge on our upcoming trip and the above were our options for a smoking optional room. I talked to several people (including all the wonderful folks on this board) trying to get the options available to us and this is what we were told

Hope this helps

glewis1123,

I have a question. We have requested a non-smoking room on the 5th floor. We will be staying in a one-bedroom suite (which are at the ends of the little "fingers" that jet out from the resort"-from what we were told).

You say the smoking optional rooms are at the end of wings. Could you elaborate a little. Do you think that means the smoking rooms are by the suites that happen to be on the 5th floor?

Thanks in advance for any info.

I just looked at my resort map and when we were there in May 2002 we had a smoking optional room. We were in the very last block - 2nd room on the left. We faced the Zebra Trail. The room was on the 4th floor - standard Savannah view and our room was 457? - 2nd door on the left in the last block.

What they were saying about "end of the fingers that jett out from the resort". If you look at a resort map just before the last block on Zebra Trail there is another corridor off to the right that has a block of rooms - maybe this is the area they were talking about - but I don't know for sure.

Like I said before, this was in May 2002 and was definitely a smoking room as there were stickers on the inside of the sliding glass door about no smoking on balcony and there were also ashtrays inside the room.

It is a very beautiful and unique resort I know you will love it!!!!!!!

It is now our favorite resort - second to none!!!

If you have any other questions, please ask.

When we stayed at AKL last month - I was disappointed that our 5th floor, non-smoking room did not have a "no smoking" sticker on the balcony door.

It did have a sticker - it was the universal "do not" sign (you, know, round and red with a slash). But, it showed an animal(s) and a hand throwing things off the balcony, not a cigarette...

I keep hearing people talk about these stickers and signs forbidding smoking on the balconies....I wonder why they only put them in SOME rooms. The two rooms I was in, I specifically looked for these elusive signs. There were definitely, positively, absolutely, NO signs refering to smoking on the balconies.

I keep thinking that people may have seen those generic red circle slash things and without looking harder, just assuned they were no smoking signs.
