Anyone ever flown AirTran? I have only flown southwest but AirTran had much better fares out of Boston. It looks like its non refundable though. So if something comes up and we can't go then we've lost all that airfare- is that right? Or would insurance cover that? Looks like you pay per checked bags each way but you get a seat assignment- wouldn't have to do early bird check in fees. Do the resorts check you in for return flights on AirTran? Thanks!

. . . yes

. . . Southwest has bought Air Tran
. . . but, it isn't complete until 2013

. . . not refundable
. . . but, there is a $75 change fee
. . . plus, any difference in ticket price

So if something comes up and we can't go then we've lost all that airfare- is that right?
. . . not lost, since you can reschedule for the change fee
. . . there is also a cancellation fee available for $75

Or would insurance cover that?
. . . not usually

Looks like you pay per checked bags each way but you get a seat assignment- wouldn't have to do early bird check in fees.
. . . you pay for seat assignment $6-$20 per flight
. . . you pay for checked luggage $20 first bag, $25 second bag

Do the resorts check you in for return flights on Air Tran?
. . . yes

For more fees, see http://www.airtran.com/policies/ancillary_fees.aspx

Oh, thanks. Didn't see anything about paying for seat assignment and $75 change fee on a $98 flight isn't too good. Maybe the extra $ for southwest out of a smaller airport is better. Hmmmmmm

I tend to fly AirTran out of Logan for last minute trips to Florida. I have been able to get some really good fares that way. Unless they change their refund/change policy to mirror SW's system, I wouldn't book them too far out.
But I have to say that I have been very pleasantly surprised when flying AirTran...very good experiences.
