We just booked our rt tickets via airtran for Easter break. It's DH, myself, DS (14) and DD (11). I see that we can check in 24 hrs in advance for seat assignments.

I'm confused at how this works....Do we actually select our seats at this point, or do we see our assigned seats at this point and we then have the opportunity to change them if something is available?

I've seen posts, with both options, and I'm wondering which way it is....

TIA!

I called AirTran about this and understood that you picked your seats.

good luck

non-internet sales fares DO get to select pre-assigned seats (we've only had this happen once).

We're flying Airtran in 2 weeks. This is our first time not having assigned seats and it's got me a little frazzled. I didn't know we could check in beforehand...has anyone else ever done this?

Yes, it is very easy. Go to airtran.com and use their check in 24 hours in advance. The system will assign you seats at that point and you can choose different seats if you want to.

Depending on your fare level, you may be able to get seats now. Only the lowest fare levels have to wait until check in (which includes the 24 online check in). Go to My Itineraries on airtran.com to see if it offers you the chance to choose your seats...

We flew Airtran for the first time last month. We checked in on-line 24 hours prior to our flight and our seats were assigned. I could have changed our seats at that time.

Our our return flight, I went to the concierge desk in the lobby of the Boardwalk Inn at Disney and asked them to check us in. It took five minutes and worked out perfectly.

Airtran was great. We were early on our outbound flight to Orlando and returned on time.

No complaints.

We did the same thing with 24 hr. check-in last June. The also accomodated DH's need for extra leg room due to a back injury. They assigned us seats in the first row and even though they normally only seat the "disabled" person and traveling companion, they put all 6 of us into the first two rows. We had great service on both flights. We loved the addition of XM Satillite Radio for free. Also, our pilot got clearance to temporarily change his flight path so we could see the space shuttle launch on July 4th....now THAT is something we will NEVER forget!!!

Air-Tran Rocks!

What did you have to do to get seats that would accommodate your husband's back problem? My DH has a bulging disc that he may need surgery for but most likely won't have the surgery until after our trip. Stretching his legs (he is 6'3") would definitely make his trip more comfortable.

You have to ask at the airport as the first row is assigned at the airport. The other option is to get to the airport at the 4 hour mark and get exit row seats. We did this on our trip over MEA. We got there at the 4 hour mark (when you can check bags) and snagged the two exit rows on the 2 seat side of the plane. We then went over to MOA and and had lunch at the Rainforest Cafe to start off the theming and then went back to catch our flight..... what a great way to start our trip!

That does sound like a great start! Unfortunately, our flight is around 9 a.m. and we are traveling with an extended family group. Guess we will try our luck when we get there!

Hey duds -

We're going to WDW at the end of this October (10/27-11/2). Airtran has nonstop flghts with good times at a good price. But booked Airtran quite a bit in advance under the same conditions (good price & schedule) for last year's trip (8 days beginning Friday after Thanksgiving). Airtran changed the times often & our flight down ended up with a 9 pm arrival (when I booked it was a lot closer to noon arrival, LOL).

Anyway, I know they change the schedule, but wondered if they mess with the fall schedule as much as the winter one. Do you recall if your October flight schedule changed much?

What do you think the chances are of keeping a pretty good schedule if we book now? I thought service and planes were good - have no qualms about flying them other than schedule.

I might wait for SC & NWA to come down in price - don't think our dates are all that popular of a travel time.

TIA for any comments.

Our MSP to MCO flight did change. It started out with a 9am departure and ended up with a 140pm departure. I guess I expect schedule changes and go with them. Expect Airtran to change the schedule... if they are currently later in the day, they may move to earlier, but I guess that is the chance you take with them. SC and NWA will stay high if it is MEA week, if it is after that week, then there is a good chance NWA and SC may come down in price... though I have not been happy with SC pricing the past year or so... I have never been happy with NWA pricing.... Airtran has offered the fairest deals to MCO over the past year or so....

Also flew Airtran for our flight last month. 24 hours prior to our return flight we were in AK. Went to Guest Services at the front of the park and was able to check in and get seats for return flight. CMs were very helpful. Our experience with Airtran was good. Our return flight time did change----a total of 2 minutes later! Will fly them again. Also love the XM radio.

We love Airtran. I always get the cheap flights online and have never had a problem chosing seats 24 hours in advance. When you check in they might show you seats they have assigned to you. You can then click on each individual seat and change it to your liking. I just flew SW two weeks ago and while I had no problems it is so much nicer to chose your seats ahead of time. We've also never had a flight change with Airtran.
