From TSA's blog

A passenger flying out of Yuma International Airport was arrested after a Transportation Security Officer (TSO) searched his bag in response to an Explosive Trace Detection (ETD) test that came back positive. One-half ounce of C4 explosive was found in his checked bag, concealed in a tobacco can.

EDT is a major reason that that the body imaging machines are unnecessary. It's hard to imagine that a tobacco can, with a "chaw" in it appearing on an xray of a checked bag it would alert an Airport Security Screener sufficiently to initiate a bag search. A positive on EDT gets attention and is also reasonable cause for a search - either of a bag or of a person.

If that passenger would have used a plastic container and carried through on his person through a checkpoint he would have made it through if no body scanner was used. It would have not set off a metal detector. The last dozen times I have flown, only once have my bags or me have been screened for explosives.

We may see an increase of ETD tests now that implanted explosives are being used, or at least discussed by AQ.
