Airmiles Armchair Chatter

My hunt for the miles is always buoyed when there's a plan for using them, that concrete goal drives me to "win" I still refuse to break my cardinal rule of "don't spend money just to earn miles", I do my best not to buy something if it's not on sale and if that happens to line up with an offer I'll pounce on it. Hubby gave me a very lofty goal to reach, anyone wanting to lay odds on me making it? :P

He wants us to get enough miles between the 2 accounts so when I merge them we can cash them in for an Annual Pass via a Personal Shopper o_O Using our mindset that everything we get from the miles is free why not get something that will also help us SAVE money?? If we had it for the Nov trip we'd save around $200 on the resort alone and the cost of meals will also be lowered. We KNOW we're going for 2 weeks in Feb/March so we'll save on resort/meals/schtuff that trip as well. AND Our 40th Anniversary is next year so we're already leaning towards a long weekend again.

Here's the math at the moment:
AP listed as $1,489.94 including tax and the current exchange rate puts that at $2,024.83
Using the Airmiles equation of $10 = 95 miles that would come in at 19,236 miles
The main account is sitting at 15,000 and the secondary account has 3,200 for a current total of around 18,000. That doesn't include any of the miles I earned this past weekend (still not confident in the whole 30x Dollarama thing) so if we combine the accounts this is doable for at least the Feb/March 2024 trip.

HOWEVER - I know the Personal Shopper option doesn't use this straight math, anyone requested a quote recently?
Thoughts on using the miles for this?
Refuse to redeem for flights now if it means I'm paying the taxes TWICE plus a rather hefty service charge- not happy to pay for those with my miles and I'm assuming this applies to any of the travel related rewards.
We have 14 one-day hoppers in our accounts (7 each but they can be re-assigned so one person can use all of them) which will be more than enough for the way we do Disney, we're not doing any parks in November.

My last quote was July 5th - two one day HS tickets (value $349.32 USD)
4,975 AM

I have enough AM for one, and a half :) Not sure how long I will wait to get a new quote

Using that quote they are going with $1USD =14.24 miles
That means an AP = 21,266 miles 😖💰🤦‍♂️
That isn't doable at our current earning rate. Even if we bump up to the next BMO Mastercard there isn't enough time for even our February trip

Anhyone have any idea what this means? I've had targeted offers for Dollarama recently, I would have thought this should have posted as 75AM not 16.

Does this sound possible. The second half of the 75 Bonus miles offer is that I get 5X AM on the purchase as well. 16AM would be the 4X to a posting of 4AM to get to 5X (in total). Purchase came to $34 tax incl so that makes no sense.

had 12 miles post for my Dollarama 75, it makes zero sense to me! I had an offer to get 5x miles for every $25 i spend on my BMO Mastercard on top of the spend $30 get 10. Problem I'll have with keeping track of this mess is I tried to use both AM cards so lost out on a few of those but they'll still count towards the BMO offer (I hope!)

I figure if everyone here who was able to do that offer posts between the bunch of us we may be able to figure it out. Oh well "it's all gravy" as Airmiles likes to say.

Sorry it's a little fuzzy I made it larger so it's easier to read. These at the TC for the 5x part of the offer. There's going to be no tracking this as it is cumulative and fractions of AM will not be awarded. So unless we know what their time period for awarding is there will be no tracking them. Just hope for the best. These miles aren't even supposed to be awarded yet at the last line says end of offer period which is November 6 and yet we just had some posted.

I give up. I'll just take the AM and "start the car"!

Ok I don't give up but it will take another week for me to figure it out. I went to my BMO M/C statement. If I add up the two transactions for Aug 13-19 ( mine were Aug 16,18) they come to $50.01 (I have W/E M/C) so 50/12=4 (part AM don't work) 16 is the extra AM needed to get to the 5X.

As I say this is just a theory at this point. I will need to see one more weeks (?) cylce to see if it holds true. It may be every two weeks who knows.

Thoughts?

What I learned this past weekend flying.

1. Always put your Aeroplan or WestJet # into your flight booking. It makes a difference. I didn't think about doing it as I wasn't going to earn any points as I booked through AM. The airlines to prioritize their loyalty members.

2. Always check in at exactly the 24 hour mark if you haven't pre-selected your seats. Seconds count when snapping up those seats. Flights are almost always flying full these days. You don't want to experience the "standy-by" list. It is stressfull.

All in all it worked out for me. My flight to Winnipeg I got a seat assignment 5 minutes before boarding. At first it was the back of the plane then they moved me again to Business class. (scored on that one) Flight home I managed to get a premium seat as all others were taken and I had booked Standard Economy. I did get that one when I checked in, didn't have to do the stand-by list routine again.

I shopped at Dollarama on Friday and Saturday last week. Picked up a $30GC and a little other something. I haven't seen the AM post for the linked card offer (10AM) yet. Has anyone else had their GC purchases at Dollarama post yet? I know we'll be waiting for a long while for the 30x part of the transaction.

I purchased a gift card plus a couple of other things the previous weekend (for the spend $10 get 100 AM) and both the 10 and 100 AM have posted.
I have not had anything post for this past weekend’s Dollarama shop yet (again bought a gift card and a couple of other things).
