Airlines?

Another set of AirTran to Delta flyers here. We loved AirTran before Southwest, but Southwest seems to have less flights in the day and the cheapest ones are always in the early AM or late until the PM. Also we are not fans of the "line up to get seats on the plane" idea. We like to choose our seats and even pay a little extra for more legroom. So being in ATL we stick with Delta. We don't get as good of deals upgrading to first class as we did with Airtran, but still we get decent deals usually.
I flew United once for work and it was a long cramped flight out to San Francisco and back. They wanted over $200 per flight for a little more legroom. And since work paid, United was the cheapest and in was crammed in an economy seat.

Hey all,

So I was wondering everyone's experience with different airlines?

I mean I was thinking about just going with the cheapest (flying phili to orlando) but in doing some research this probably is not the best option...I mean you have spirit; but this gets more expensive as they charge for EVERYTHING - not to mention the reports I've heard of flights being canceled or changed on a whim

frontier seems to have an issue with canceled/changing flights

united is...well..united

I'm probably freaking myself out over all the horror stories online...after all people are going to post awful experiences, not the decent ones.

I mean on one hand it's not a long flight so it doesn't need to be the comfiest, but I'm terrified of a flight being canceled or switched without notice.

So. those who flights frequently (or not) is there a particular airline you prefer and why? Also is there an airline you avoid?

Philadelphia is my home airport. I fly out several times a month for work and several times a year for vacation. For businesses travel I am typically on American, Delta, or southwest. For personal travel we almost always do southwest.

Despite everyone's reservations about seating, southwest is, in my experience, regularly, and consistently the most orderly and stress free. For the legacy airlines, everyone crowds the door and all of the elites/status members credit card holders etc go first and it's chaotic. Then there's the delight of scanning your phone or boarding pass and a new little ticket popping up letting you know your seat got moved. One time last year flying home from Kansas City on Delta, a guy happened to see my boarding pass over my shoulder wholeness we were assigned the same seat. We both went to the gate agent and they had us each scan our boarding passes. I got on and sat in the seat and he was literally the last on and was many rows back and not happy about it. Not sure what happened there.

I've done spirit and won't again. Frontier always comes out more expensive when I add up the fees for seats and bags. So I don't choose them either.

So all of this is to say fly who you're comfortable with based on what's important to you. There are many options out of Philadelphia. Not every airline is for everyone.

I fly mostly Delta or Southwest, as they have the most flights from my home airport. Though I have flown on United a time or two. The only airline I avoid is Allegiant. Yes, the price is usually great--until you start adding in all of the extras. Charge for checked bags (smaller than most airlines) plus charges for carry-ons and charges for seat assignments. Last time I ran the numbers they would have cost more than Southwest. And then you have the problem of few planes, and if there is a problem the delay can be days (one of my coworkers had that happen).

We avoid Allegiant as well. Not only are there many extra charges that bump the low fares up, but their fleet is aging and in poor repair. The Tampa Bay Times has been running a continuing feature about their many mechanical issues over the past year, and it's really eye opening to see how frequently they happen. I don't like hearing that parts failure is almost a guarantee these days!

My family alway fly Southwest. ATL to MCO nonstop. Bags fly free. Never had a issue with them. My trip is May 1st and a month ago I got a roundtrip ticket for $99 bucks

We always fly on Alaska. They have the most non-stop flights from Seattle and they treat their customers great unlike United and Spirit.

We've flown Southwest the most and have had the best experiences with them. The two free checked bags is a wonderful perk IMHO. Their customer service and flight attendants are personable as well as professional. Our flights with them are mostly to Florida, but we also used them for a recent Las Vegas trip. American is fine, but rarely has the best fares from our airport. We've only flown United on coast-to-coast trips and to Hawaii and those trips have been equally fine. I only fly Jet Blue occasionally for work and have flown Delta once to WDW. For international travel, we like British Airways.

We are out of Chicago MDW and always go Southwest these days. It is just myself and DD26, so don't worry about seats together with no little ones. Of course, we prefer to be together and so far that's never been an issue. Sometimes we book EBCI for the early check in and better boarding section. Definitely really like the 2 checked bags fly free and no charge for my carry on! I book when they open the flight time for my trips, and then stalk SW(actually like that fun little game, lol), and always end up getting a much lower fare, usually close to $100 each way so I'm happy with that. I do have SW pts with my Southwest Chase card, and that really works well when I change to a lower fare, as getting points back I can use them at any time for anyone, instead of getting a credit that must be used within one year from booking and only for the person who's name was on the ticket. But, if I have to use cash instead of pts which we did once a couple years ago, I still appreciate being able to switch and get a credit instead of having to stick with whatever price I got at original booking! And we were able to use it for another flight so that worked well. So far, we've had no bad experiences and good customer service, so I'd definitely recommend SW!

.... I don't know what will happen next time though, as they have cut way down nonstop options, and have none after 4pm, which we like be able to choose sometimes for the way down to fly after school, to get there for example for the last day of FD. And of course to fly back as late as possible to have the time on our last day.

I haven't noticed the no non stops after 4 p.m., particularly on the way back from MCO to MDW. Always have several to choose from on the way back, for example on our day back in mid Aug, there are 7 after 4 pm. We'll take the latest at 10 pm, so we'll have almost like another whole day in the park, yay! Hopefully as we are out of Chicago that continues to stay the same.
I did notice though that they don't have much in nonstop during the week day afternoons which is disappointing. We're hoping for something around 2, 2:30 but there's only several connecting flights. I'd go morning, but DD26 is only taking off a half day from her job at school. So flying about 3:30 we get in close to 7. Hoping that when our actual Wednesday, Nov 8 date opens, they add some times. So far can only check Wed Nov 1st, although that did change from what I saw when just checking what times they were currently offering for Wednesdays. They were from a 5 something pm time getting in closer to 9, for times thru summer and early fall. I'd like to be able to maybe get in a few evening Mk park hours that night! With holidays coming I was hoping they'd be adding more nonstop afternoon flights when the next set of fare times open up.

I avoid the bare bones, pay extra for everything airlines like Alegiant or Spirit. I have never found them cheaper by the time you pay for EVERYTHING they charge you for
We fly often and have no problems at all on American, Delta and Southwest.
I have credit cards with each so we get perks/miles, including free trips/bags.

Whenever possible, we'll go on Southwest. No one else comes close to the flexibility you get with regards to rebooking better fares, switching times or canceling altogether. The lack of extra fees is another nice bonus.

I'm trying to build up confidence in Frontier, as their service seems to be improving a bit and Trenton is really convenient for me. I stay away from Allegiant because of the aging fleet issue, really ridiculous fees (extra to book online...really?) and SFB is inconvenient for both DME and usually more expensive for rental cars. If all else fails, American has the most travel times, but tends to be more on the expensive side.

We have flown JetBlue, Southwest and Delta in the past to MCO. Delta no longer offers non-stop to MCO from our local airport so that rules them out, though the times we did fly them we never had any issues. Southwest, while we have never had any issues with we don't fly because we don't like their boarding process. JetBlue has become our go to airline. Flown them several times in the past few years. We liked the Even More Space seating, the TV's at your seat makes the flight go by faster and their crews and customer service has always been excellent. We will pay more to fly with them even if Southwest is cheaper plus we have the JetBlue credit card so it is easy for us to accumulate miles.

We usually fly Southwest or Jet Blue, because they're the only carriers that provide nonstop service to Orlando from our city. Decent customer service & no major problems with them. The 2 bags fly free & no penalty for itinerary changes is a big draw for SWA, although I dislike their lack of assigned seating.

I refuse to fly United again, both becuase of the recent incident in the news, and because of an incident two years ago in which we were delayed on the plane (unable to move) for well over an hour before take-off due to a food service issue. And that was on a short, late-night flight that didn't offer food service, so...

American has been okay, but I dislike that they have a $200 per person change fee, even the time we flew first class. And of course we can't fly them nonstop to virtually anywhere from our city. Their planes on our routes are sometimes small and old, too.

Only flew Frontier once, and there was a 3 hour delay, even though it was an early morning flight & there were no weather issues. It was rumored a pilot was drunk or hung over. They gave everyone a $50 voucher for a future flight within one year. Never used it.

I've flown Delta, Jet Blue, United, and American BOS to MCO. I'll fly whichever of these 4 is cheapest tho bc no major complaints about any of my experiences with them. I like Jet Blue and Delta the best bc the had the fun little tv's on the chairs. I generally don't wait for Southwest bc we go on spring break so I buy tickets as early as I can when I see a good price. (We flew Jet Blue for a non-spring break trip). I've flown Virgin American to LAX and really liked them too, but they seem to only do coast to coast.

The husband of one of the woman in my wife's book club recently flew Spirit from BOS to MCO. His flight was cancelled on the way back and they told him they could get him back, in THREE days!! He said forget it, and rented a car and drove back. I believe Spirit, and maybe Frontier do not have interline agreements with the other airlines that allows them to validates a ticket to get you back on another airline. It's supposedly is one of the things that keeps their cost down. If that had been me waiting three extra days would cost me three days pay and violate my companies attendance policy.

A number of years ago I was flying back from IND to BOS via CLE on Continental ( now United) and there was a weather issue in CLE. They booked me on Delta and got me back to BOS and I arrived maybe 1-2 hours after I was originally supposed to arrive and at no cost to me.

Now a days I usually from JetBlue from BOS to MCO. I wish SW had non-stops BOS to MCO and that would give me more options.
