Southwest Airlines just released the airfare for March 13-20, and wouldn't you believe it, or trip went up $600.

Now I think we are goin to have to drive, and save money. 16 hours in a SUV for 2 days...yeah:scared1:

Oh well, booked the hotel, tickets, and DDP, and maybe it will go down in the next few months.

See everyone there!!:yay:

Same here have the cruise booked. I waited for DH to get home and the rate went way high. We may be driving for the first time also. I have you beat 24 hour drive.

I will bet that SW airfare will come down significantly before your March trip. I would hold off, and check regularily.

I'll trade your 16 hours for my 19.5! Driving from Chicago..2 days for us, JUST a bit too long to go straight thru, especially in December w/less daylight. Yeah, airfare is nuts, rental cars are nuts...look at it this way, if you decide to stay longer, you have no airline penalties or last minute airfare rates to pay!:thumbsup2
We also have a car payment at this time, our general rule is if we are still paying on the car, we are not paying for airfare as well ( especially from Chicago to Orlando the week before Christmas..:scared1:)
Target has some great DVD's for $5 or under, not the latest releases, but sanity savers all the same. AND you can stop and get groceris now for the room at your convenience, saving some more $$$..driving isn't evil...the trip back home hurts, no doubt, but you can bring any souvees you want home without worrying about is it liquid, do I have to ship it, no security check...driving is a GOOD thing!
(I will return to this post before we leave to remind myself why WE are doing it :rotfl:) have a great trip!

I agree!

I booked the trip down for March 7 first when rates were good. paying double for the flight home for March 14th. It is the highest rated day of the whole month of march and Easter weekend from Orlando to Pittsburgh! And it keeps climbing. This would have been good information to know before I booked everything, but, at least I got the lowest rate of the day yesterday before it went up.

I keep checking for lower fares but not sure if it is going to come down or not. I have been trying to figure out why that day the rates are so high for those flights. The only big thing I found in Pittsburgh that weekend is the St. Patty's Day parade.

Yeah, I booked everything else, and just ill do the flight seperately. No big deal, as long as we get there in one piece.

Get on SW's email list. They run specials all the time so you should be able to grab something in time.

WOW!:scared1: This is making me VERY happy about the $59 tickets I just bought on SW for our November trip. I got them through their DING! offers. The three of us are flying nonstop out of Raleigh/Durham for $430 round trip. I would really recommend that you sign up for DING! and check every offer they send you.

We were hoping to get some good Southwest fares yesterday for April school vacation week (what was I thinking!!) , but by the time I was able to log on (like 2pm!), the low fares out of Manchester and Providence were gone. We even tried Tampa as we are staying offsite at time share. So, for the very first time, we are driving down from Mass, about 22 hours!!!:headache: It's my family of 4 in one car and my sister's family of 5 in her car. We'll make an overnite stop both ways.

I can't believe we're doing this, but the savings is huge...

And if the only way I can get my fill of Disney is to drive, so be it!!:thumbsup2

If you don't mind flying other carriers, keep checking. Last year I wasn't going to travel over April vacation because airfare was way too high and I won't make that drive (I'm in southern NH). About the first of March I was able to flights out of Boston. We took US Air on the way down for $74/pp (first flight of the day - left at 5 am) and Continental on the way back for $79/pp (mid-afternoon, left at 1:00 pm). We did have to fly Sunday to Monday to get those fares but it was worth it to stay the extra night in the hotel to save on the airfare.

When I flew PIT-MCO in mid June, Saturday down & back, the price started out around $360 round trip and never went down, it went up to close to $400. I ended up transferring some of my Hyatt & Hilton points to SW to get the credits I needed for a free ticket. My original reservation was for Sunday but the only free ticket was at night, so I added a night at the Swan with my Starwood points and flew down Saturday. Both flights were totally full so they must have had people paying it.

They've gone WAY up. I purchased our late September 09 SW flights the first day they came out - April 14th. I paid a total of $314.40 RT/nonstop for both DH and I. That same trip (same days/close to same times) for late April/early May is showing $548.40. That's a $234 difference. That is just crazy. It's almost gonna be cheaper to go back to traveling by the AutoTrain. Yeah, it'll take longer, but I have the time.

Looks like you're flying out of Houston, right? We're also out of Houston and have much experience booking SW flights! Since that's Spring Break week for us (& most of TX), I think SW knows it and knows that they'll still sell out those flights even at high prices. We're going to DL and the only way I got any decent fare or could even use our award tickets was to fly the Friday before and come back the Monday after (i.e. taking kids out of school 2 extra days). It's pretty much always been this way for us, but is especially bad lately now that award seats are capacity controlled.

Good luck! The drive from Houston isn't too bad (we did it last July), but I hated eating up 2 vacation days travelling on each end of the trip!

We're driving from Sugar Land, and for the first time my parents are flying Southwest. Continental is sky high - $568 from IAH.

Are you stopping or going straight through? We will stop in Mobile after leaving Friday night.

If it makes you feel any better, I was stalking the SW website yesterday waiting for them to open their schedule. I literally refreshed the page every 2minutes or so. I booked the second the fares were released, and they were never "low", at least from Manchester. We are north of Boston so we don't fly from Providence. I did still book because they were better than Delta or Jetblue, but we are paying $1800 for 4 nonstop tickets for travel April 18-24. I could've gotten them slightly cheaper if we left very late (arriving in MCO at 9:30 at night) or came home equally late, but I sucked it up and paid more for decent times. So don't feel bad, you really didn't miss out on any great fares! :goodvibes

Don't get discouraged. Try again next week Tuesday. Sometimes, they only release a few seats at a time. Let's say, they released 15 seats. The first 2 were bought, and then the next 2. So each time 2 were bought it raised the price, and when the 15 were gone, Southwest probably got what they wanted for those 15. Next week, it will start over again.

I too am shopping fares for our May trip to the World. (From NY)

I have only started shopping them this week but they are much higher than I normally pay. I'm wondering why the fares are this high. Can anybody shed some some insight as to why this may be?

I'm going to just wait it out and hopefully they will dip. Needing some pixie dust!

Hello. At the Beginning of the week I booked JETBLUE from JFK to MCO for $1016 round trip for 4 nonstop flights. Southwest was about $1500 round trip and there was a stop.

As soon as we find flights that are in our price range( hopefully the lower end of the price range.) we buy! i get tooo worried about the prices if i have to wait.
We don't have the time to take off from work to drive down and back if we want to spend a week in Disney so flying is a must for us!!! good luck with your flights everyone! :)
