If I purchase airfare from say Orbitz, Travelocity, Priceline, Expedia, etc., is it possible to purchase trip insurance on just the airline tickets?

I don't think so, but why not search for "insurance" on whichever site you choose, before you buy the tickets?

I used Travel Insured International last year. It was trip for my mom and I on Air Tran. She had health problems but the pre-existing condition clause was waived because I purchased the insurance within 5 days of the plane ticket purchase . She passed away before the trip. I called Air Tran, they immediately refunded her ticket in full but they would only give me a credit towards future travel (-$50). I filed a claim with Travel Insured International for my ticket and got a full refund.

Thanks fo the replies. I checked out the sites you guys list and a few other. I found that Priceline offers cancellation insurance that you can purchase for an additional $15.00. I read through their policy and it does say they will refund the total cost of your airline tickets if you have to cancel due to an unforseen illness, or trip interruption. It even covers lost baggage. Not bad for an extra $15.00. Most other sites I researched were $50+ per person. Since I found the best price for my tickets on Priceline, I think I'll try their offer and hope I don't have to use it.
