I will be flying from Denver on Mar 11 (Sat) to Orlando and returning on Sun, Mar 19. I don't have any flexibility with dates as this is the kids spring break. I need four tickets.
Now, airfare is never cheap from Denver. Here are my choices currently -
Only Frontier and Ted (United) have direct, non-stop flights. However they are currently $427/person for the times I like. Frontier - (12:00pm-5:20pm, 6:20-8:20pm), Ted - (8:29am-1:53pm, 5:27-7:20pm)
My other practical choices are Delta and American Airlines. Their flights have a stop, but are ~$255/person. Delta - (8:40am-3:58pm 1 hr layover, but same flight, 7:05-8:39pm/9:30-10:36pm) through Atlanta. American Airlines - (9:12am-12:09pm/12:51-4:16pm, 7:13-9:05pm/10:10-11:08pm) through Dallas/Fort Worth.
I also know that waiting until a couple of months before the flight is not good for flights in March. In 2004, I decided in January to go to WDW on the kids spring break. Airfare was over $500 and seats were limited. I used miles from my credit card to pay for $500/person and I paid the additional $35/person to get the direct flights (flew Frontier). Flights with a stop were only a little cheaper.
My credit card mileage program has changed and now the number of miles required is dependant on the cost of the ticket. I have enough miles currently to buy four tickets up to $237. So I don't have quite enough miles to get all four tickets. It will probably take another two months to get enough miles to pay the $255 rate.
So
1. Do you think that the non-stop flight prices are likely to come down? How long do you think I should wait?
2. Do you think that the flights with a stop are likely to go up significantly?
3. If I can get non-stop flights for my current miles balance, I will jump on it. I think I will pay up to $250 for non-stop and $200 for a stop. I'm just not sure how much more I will have to actually pay (in dollars or miles).
4. Does anyone have an opinion on flying Delta through Atlanta or AA through Dallas? Anyone recommend one over the other?
5. The AA layover on the way to Orlando is only 42 minutes and the AA site has a note of "terminal change". How long does it take to get between AA terminals in Dallas and is 42 minutes long enough? There is another flight that leaves almost an hour early, but that makes the layover 1 hr 34 min. Should I do this instead if I decide to do AA?
As for now, I'm waiting, but I don't want to wait too long and have prices go sky high on me.
