So I went over to Air Tran's web site to make a note of how large a checked bag can be. We are flying them in a couple of months, so I want to start figuring out how much stuff I can take. Anyway, it seems they have redone the luggage part of their web-site, and I can't for the life of me see where they straight out tell you what size a check bag needs to be.

They list how large a bag they will check for active duty. They tell you how much the oversize fees will be. But they don't tell you the size limit of a normal checked bag. Should I just guess as long as it isn't listed as oversized it is ok?:confused3

Also, I want to mention they are changing the size of their accepted carry-ons and making them smaller. Maybe part of the change before they become Southwest? Starting March 1 a carry-on must be 24+16+10, which is a bit smaler than they currently are allowing.

Since that has been SW's carry-on size, it does sound like another part of the merger taking effect. Since they'll be minimizing your carry-on size, maybe the SW no luggage fee for the first two bags will begin soon.

Does this help? http://www.airtran.com/faq/q/what_a...t=Baggage+Information&rt=index_faqs&nav_id=85

We got charged $45 for an oversize bag last year. It was a bag we have taken to Disney dozens of times in the past, including taking it on AirTran the year before. Definitely pay attention to the restrictions, even if you think your bag will be OK.

I was just researching this a couple days ago. We're flying for the first time on AirTran, and I was nervous because I've read a few instances where people who thought their bags were within the limits weren't. I have a bag that I've taken on SW multiple times, but depending on how picky I was being about measuring it, it could possibly be more. Decided to go with a smaller bag, just in case. Hopefully there are no issues, and I can get everything for the 4 of us packed.

Most airlines use the same standard for checked bags, within an inch or so of each other. The bags you buy in the store, as well as equipment cases, are generally made to meet this common standard, but some bags are in a gray area, especially those that expand. If you stuff the thing so much that it can exceed those dimensions, they may call you on it. It's really up to the check-in agent to decide if they want to get out the measuring tape. The scale is the much more obvious way they use to decide if they charge you more.

How long ago did AirTran change their rules? I could of sworn that in March 2010 the limit was 60lbs. Now I will have measure my bags before starting to pack.

Nope, 50 pounds for a while now. I know since I use them often and get out the scale for my gear cases to always be under 50, no matter what airline.

Thanks! I am relieved to hear that. Everything I brought last time should fit in my suitcase then without being overweight.
