do you know what the odds are of a man getting a woman pregnant? :confused3 My brother in law just had one. He and my sister in law just had their third boy and he wasn't planned. After my husband and I have another kid, I may want him to get one.

From vasectomy.com

Vasectomy is considered nearly 100 percent effective and safe.

DH had one, a bag of peas and a few days on the couch and he was fine. :teeth: (Sorry honey if you're reading this :p )

My DH's doctor had him come back so many weeks (and after so many something else) to test him. Everything is not out of the man's body for a certain time period. We still used our normal birth control until he got a "clean bill". I just asked DH, and he said his doctor said that after that point it is like 99% effective, but there are rare cases where people do still get pregnant.

I was wondering the same thing. A friend of mine was telling me the other day about the wife of a guy her dh worked with ending up pregnant and he accused her of cheating. He went and got his "stuff" checked and it ends up that there were "guys" getting out! How much do you think that guy had to apologize to his wife????? My friend also told me that she had to sign a form stating that she was aware that a vasectomy was not always 100% effective. I am assuming that it is very rare, but I would love some stats! I really think that I am ready to say NO MORE BABIES!!!!!!!

The odds are very very low. I just had one done a few months ago and the method my doctor used pretty much guarantees that there will be no little guys getting out.

How effective is vasectomy in preventing pregnancy?
Vasectomy may be the safest, most effective kind of birth control. Only about 15 out of 10,000 couples get pregnant the first year after a vasectomy.

Will the vasectomy work right away?
No. You'll need to ejaculate as many as 15 to 20 times before the sperm will be cleared from both the vas deferens. For that reason, keep using birth control. Your doctor will ask you to bring in samples of your ejaculation after the operation. Only after you have 2 sperm-free samples will you be considered unable to get a woman pregnant. This may take 3 months or longer.

The main reason is not waiting long enough afterward because there could be some little guys still in the system after the cuts are made. My doctor said to use an alternative method until they give an "all clear". After 12 weeks he didn't give me the "all clear" so I have to wait another 4 weeks and test again.

I had to sign that form too.

DH had his about 3 years ago---the doctor removed a small section of the tubing that runs from hither to yon so that the 2 ends couldn't reattach on their own then cauderized the ends
He was up and about the same day and played basketball the next

We were told that he had to ejaculated upwards of 20x to make sure he was empty then he had to back 2 more times to be tested-the boys were still swimming at 12 weeks-there weren't as many but they were still there

It is so much safer for the man to have a vasectomy than it is for the woman to have a tubal ligation--plus the recovery time is far less and less complications

I had mine 34 years ago and haven't had a problem. Like anything else, you should go to an expert in the field. The last thing you want to hear during or years after is "oops!"

Be sure to use something until you get the all clear. There's a woman in town who will be having a baby on Friday, found out she was pregnant about a month after her husbands vasectomy. He was thrilled, her not so much.

It better be really, really good. My dh just had one last week. It took all of 15 minutes and he had very little pain. He spent the afternoon with an ice bag and by the next morning he was fine.

My husband got tested and is getting tested again since it's been 2 years +. Knowing us, we will probably keep getting him tested until I am 65 LOL!

My BIL had to get his done a second time because the first time didn't work. DH never got tested after the fact but it has been 11 years, I think we are ok. He dr took out an inch of the vas and cauterized both ends so it was pretty thorough.

My DH also was up and about the next day, no problems. It's been twelve years since he was "fixed." :rotfl:

I knew a guy whose wife got pregnant after he had his vasectomy, and after tha baby was born a DNA test proved paternity belonged to the guy. He was in the dog house for a LONG time...I think they actually ended up divorced, but not because of her--he was the one having trouble being faithful.

We had neighbors in Texas that got pregnant twice after his vasectomy. Not sure how long after the first one came, but the youngest came two years after the "surprise " baby.

LOL a little paranoid ;)

Hubby had his done in May 2005. He never went back to be tested. Although I was pregnant with #4 at the time. So far so good and no #5.

Got mine 2 years ago on my Birthday (hows that for loving hubby :cool1: ). I drove home after (real men can take pain, also wife is a bad driver :rotfl: ). I walked like John Wayne for 3 days and had "Ring Around the Ho Ho" for 6 days. I had no real pain, just felt like a bad pulled muscle.

We used differnet BC for 1 month before getting the All clear from the doctor.

And yes you do need to remove the leftover "Guys" from your system or they can do their job.

The guy that was next in line after me was having a hard time with the surgery. He had taken 2 valium and was still shaking and sweating. When I walked out and told him I had the surgery he calmed down a little :rotfl2: .
