We have friends who want to go to Florida but not Orlando :scared1: Their daughter is only 1 and they'd rather her remember it.
So they want preferably a 2 centre holiday but on a budget. They would like to go Gulf coast and the Keys, does anyone know good websites that they can book through or at least get prices.

Thanks

A long time since we did 2 centre hotel holiday but I know some friends who did something similar a couple of years ago through...
www.travelshopusa.co.uk/

I guess the main issue is they would not be flying in to Orlando, so would Miami be the destination airport?

The Keys would be about a 3 hour drive from Miami, which is probably more than enough with a very young child.
However, if they are planning going across the Everglades to the other side, well that's a lot of 'touring' for a 1 year old child..will the child actually remember any of the holiday, irrespective of where they go?

You could also check www.expedia.co.uk

Do they not fancy just using Orlando as a central base and taking tours to the beach etc from here?
We have done something similar I must admit, although I think Joshua was at least 4 or 5 when we did a Naples/Miami/Keys tour.

Otherwise they could just be positive and go for it!!

Having lived in South Florida, I feel i must tell you that your friends have ambitious plans. I doubt their 1yo will remember any of it. If they really want to go to the keys, I would suggest they consider flying to Miami or Fort Lauderdale( a great vacation sopt for families, btw), which is on the Atlantic. Key Largo is only about 1-2hr from Miami and has a very nice state park (John Pennenkamp SP), good snorkling, good fishing. If they plan to stay in Key Largo, tell them to be sure they choose a hotel facing Florida Bay(west)--the sunset is outstanding and you can't see it if you're facing the Atlantic(east.) Driving from Key Largo to Key West takes about 4hrs. It's a beautiful drive, mostly two-lanes of 45mph bumper-to-bumper traffic. Pack a picnic. I will warn you--most of the beaches in the keys are not very good; because there are coral reefs off-shore, the beaches are littered with broken coral. Ouch!

Getting from Miami to the Gulf means driving across the Everglades to the other side of the state, exactly opposite of going to the keys. The Everglades are fascinating, especially in winter when the mosquitos aren't so bad. Summer is pretty miserable. The west side of the Florida peninsula is very nice. The Gulf of Mexico is much different from the Atlantic, calmer, greener, sand is very white. On the gulf, I would suggest Sanibel Island, or Captiva(fly into Fort Myers). Both are beautiful beaches well known for great shells. It is a very relaxing place to vacation and the Gulf seafood is some of the best in the world.

Hope this helps. Tell your friends to expect terrible traffic in south Florida, but it's a great place to vacation. :yay:

I think you can fly into Tampa with BA which would be a better option for the Gulf coast - then maybe they could fly back from Miami after the Keys?

Personally with a one year old I think I would choose two places a little closer together, but we're all different :)

I have used www.bon-voyage.co.uk in the past and been very pleased with them, alternatively your friends could book flights and accommodation separately. I'm sure Virgin do 2 centre holidays too.

Thanks for the links and info.
Johnny I'm with you even if their DD doesn't remember she would still have a great time at Disney!
Minky, I agree a very ambitious plan and trying to do it on a small budget.
Miffy again I agree, with a 1 yr old I think it would be better to stay in the same place and enjoy.
One thing though we've talked about is exploring different areas of Florida and to see a sunset over the gulf coast would be amazing, nearly as good as seeing it from Weston Super Mare :rotfl2:
So even if they don't use these links I think I may
Thanks again
