Hi!! DH and I just discovered we are expecting our first baby. We are sailing on the March 27 Magic Western and it will be our very first cruise. I should be around 13 weeks or so at that time. Any advice out there from others who have gone through this? I'm hoping that if I have any morning sickness it will be gone by then. Would hate to have that combined with being seasick. I'm hoping to avoid both. I know I'll have to skip the drink of the day, and we really weren't planning any physically demanding excursions (just planning on being beach bums). Is there anything else I should avoid? Thanks!!

CONGRATULATIONS!

I can't offer any advice on cruising while pregnant but I want to wish you the best of luck on a healthy pregnancy, delivery and child.

First off, congratulations, what a place to celebrate too!

Second off...SALTINES! *grin* I LIVED with a sleeve of saltines in my hand at all times for a few weeks each pregnancy...just keeping something in my stomach helped ALOT, and Saltines are pretty mild. I'd have one before I even raised my head in the morning...and it saved me quite a few times.

Of course, I didnt' get to cruise during either pregnancy, but if it works on land, I'd bet it works at sea too! ;)

Get the medical clearance form from DCL for your OB/GYN to fill out stating just how far along you are in the pregnancy.

Do you receive the medical clearance form with the rest of your docs or do I need to call DCL and request one?

My advice is:

1- stay hydrated, this is very important to remember, dehydration causes contractions

2- don't try to do it all, early pregnancy is usually when you feel exhausted just doing nothing- so don't ruin your cruise but not getting enough rest, you'll just end up cranky with a bad headache

3- crystallized ginger- you can't take dramamine and the concensus of opinion in benadryl is mixed- I avoided it, but the ginger (although not great tasting) takes away the queasies within minutes

4- crackers are great, keep your tummy full of something, and

5- HAVE FUN!

You have to get the medical release form from the DCL, be sure you have it, they won't let you on otherwise!

I cruised last year at 22 weeks pregnant. The only thing I really did (or didn't do), was drink the water. I always got bottled water. It was the time the viruses were going around and I just wanted to be safe. (I had cruised DCL before not pg and got sick right after drinking the water...2x!)

Have fun & Congratulations

You get to eat as much as you want without concern (within reason, of course) . Most people don't need to gain anything more than a pound or so the first trimester. I didn't follow my own advice with my last pregnancy and gained 10 lbs. in those first weeks. I still have them. You will be just past that 1st. trimester & weight gain is more acceptable then (unless you are a diabetic or very overweight to begin with). I also continued breastfeeding for my first cruise (DD was 13 months at that point) so I could eat more. That 500 extra calories a day for breastfeeding sure was easy to do on the ship. Have fun!
