Pop vs Soda - definitely regional. Nobody around here calls it Soda.
My top-10 most hated words/phrases:
1. Belly
2. Moist
3. What the...?
4. Ain't it?
5. You's (as in "Do any of you's want more pop?)
6. "merica
7. "The" Jewel
8. Poo
9. Sissy ( as in "Tyler, tell sissy that is's time for dinner")
10. The name Shelly. Sorry to anyone out there named Shelly - no offense. I just have always hated that name. If it makes you feel better, my name is VERY similar - just replace the two LL's with two other consonants - and I hate my own name, too LOL
Well, there's a whole nation of 'indecent' people who use the word 'pop' and in true Canadian form, I apologise that it upsets you.
I don't like 'hubby'.
'Ironic' (generally they don't mean ironic anyway)
Epic (same thing)
Awesome (ditto)
But mostly I don't like babytalk. Don't have to talk to them like a Harvard grad either but there is a very comfortable in between place that is not 'let's put jammies on, here's your ba ba and go ni ni". (That's why I can't stand Cookie Monster...he's supposed to be educational - does anyone ever correct his grammar? Perfect learning opportunity.)
I was born in Ipswich, England and came to the States permanently when I was 10. I used a lot of strange-sounding words and even spelled them differently. I was teased mercilessly by children AND adults. I personally like it when people use different words because it usually means they are from somewhere different (even if it's just the other side of Texas) and I find it interesting
I can't think of any words or phrases with which I have any particular issue. It's all in how they are used. It might drive me nuts to have a teen who thinks everything is cray-cray. But if, for example, a well-spoken, educated panelist on Real Time with Bill Maher uses the term once, to drive home a point, it can be effective.
People using pet names of others that I don't know. Like posting on here that "DS is a at nana and poppa's". Nails on chalkboards. Just uggg.
I don't know who or what a poppa is. I have never used the word nana (hate the word actually).
People in TR are bad for this. Why not just say "my kid is with their grandparents". I know it's irrational but I really hate this. Huge pet peeve of mine.
Adults who go by their shortened or nickname, usually ending in 'y'. Sammy instead of Samuel, Tommy instead of Thomas, Becky instead of Rebecca, Bobby instead of Robert- it sounds so kiddish to me, especially in a professional setting.
