ADRs? Yes We Made Stinking ADRs - A June '15 Dining Report - Updated 10/10: Sassagoula & Wrap-up

All so called etiquette drinking times are suspended on vacation. Pre-noon drinking is perfectly acceptable. Our plane lands at MCO at 8:35 a.m. and we should be at Disney by 10. You betcha I will be having a margarita poolside no matter what time of the morning it is when we get there!

Warning Warning: Copious amounts of meat are ahead. Vegetarians beware. The rest of you have been warned ; )
I'M SO FREAKIN' READY FOR THIS. I'M SO EXCITED, KARI. I CAN'T STAND IT. :hyper:

Before donning some really cool glasses to watch some sort of LSD trip starring a duck with no pants.
You know I'm all about that No Pants life. :thumbsup2

saw some strange looking monsters attempting to be funny (they ain't got nothing on me BTW)
It's true, you're way more hilarious.

we were soon being escorted inside to check out this beautiful site:

Reminded me of a funny quote: Becoming a vegetarian is a big Missed Steak ; ) Badumdum..
OMG, IT'S SO PRETTY.

And even better, a photo of the meat in all its wondrous Charcuterie glory
Meat meat meat meat meeeeeeeat! :bitelip: *rawrs like a T-Rex!*

And now for Jason's long awaited ribeye, for all of you for whom steak is your favorite animal please do enjoy the 16 oz Prime Ribeye Steak served with Brioche, Bone Marrow, and Point Reyes Blue Cheese Butter on the side.

And a close-up if that wasn't enough meat porn for ya
Is it wrong that these two pictures turn me on a little? :scratchin Seriously, that looks AMAZEBALLS.

Jason was the first one up the next morning and elected to go for a run. While I made numerous lovely comments about running and vacation sounding like some form of torture to me, he was able to get this gorgeous early morning shot of Port Orleans Riverside
I both admire and despise people who work out in the morning at Disney, then walk the parks all day. Like... How? WHY? :confused3 Inconceivable!

Which is a combination of passion fruit, orange, and guava juices and despite the lack of alcohol is quite tasty.
I love this stuff. I can drink it by the gallon. So goooooood! :goodvibes

ut what keeps us returning to Tusker House as the only character meal we do is amazing plates of goodness like this one.

Meet my first plate of African breakfast goodies. Starting at noon and going clockwise, we have the beef bobtie which is a quiche like dish with some great spice undertones like curry and ginger. Up next are some delicious fried platiains (that still counts as a fruit right?) and some mealie cornbread. Then there is a corn beef hash with a cobbler like topping which is quite good and the very African smoked salmon ; ) Next up is mealie pap, which tastes like a cross between corn pudding and grits and is unquestionably better than both. Then some fruit (who put that here) and a yummy, but very unAfrican, cheese blintz.
Get in my belly!

Now the beauty of a late morning tusker house breakfast is you get two for the price of 1. Aka we got to enjoy a second bloody mary (don't judge) with some of their delicious lunch offerings. I didn't get a picture of Jason's plate, but here's a look at mine:

Starting from noon again, are the collard greens - which were among my favorite items on the plate - and some golden raisin basmati rice that was pretty bland. Next was a delicious samosa, which despite being held under a hot lamp was surprisingly crisp as I bit into the yummy potato and pea (I think) filling. Next was a lamb stew which was extremely flavorful and a peri-peri salmon, which had good flavor but was a bit mushy. The shrimp were good, but didn't have a ton of flavor, and the creamy substance on the plate was a coconut chicken that was moist with a subtle sweetness. In the center is a curry chicken which was really spicy, but good and last but not least is the spiced vegetable tofu, which was shockingly my favorite of the lunch dishes, as it had some good spice to it as well as some saffron flavor.

Phew, that's a lot of food ; )
Super jelly. Last year, I had a 10:45am booking here, expecting to catch the switchover from breakfast to lunch. At 11:30 they still hadn't switched! I just gave up on waiting, and went about my day. Maybe next time! :cutie:

Love Tusker House, what time did you have a ADR so you could partake in breakfast and lunch buffet? I think that is an awesome way to do it. We haven't been for the last couple trips so I think it is in our future April trip. I love the carved ham and croissants so much, oh and the juice yum! Nice pictures of all the different choices, the Bloody Mary looks great.

Pfft. You aren't doing it right if you're not having a Bloody Mary on the plane!

Make that 3 Ribeye 2 filet
I always get a filet and DH usually gets a filet. It is our favorite cut of beef. :)
We haven't eaten at the Yachtsman lately. We are pretty much spoiled by the delicious beef we have here in the Midwest. :)

So to recap for those, like me, who may not be a fan of character meals or buffets in general, Tusker House is worth consideration.
We loved Tusker House. We have eaten there only once but I still have fond memories of the delicious ham. The jungle juice was delicious. :)

We'll be having dinner at Boaties in just two weeks from tomorrow. And DH suggested we eat at Artist Point on our short, three night trip. It will be our second time eating at that restaurant and we are really looking forward to it. :)

Not my thread but we did the brunch time slot last year. Our time was 10:45. That gave us time for one-two breakfast trips and then they switched over to lunch. It was gradual though.

I just caught up on your last few reviews.

I am glad that the bouncer finally let you in at LTT. I keep meaning to try lunch there but we haven't gotten around to it yet. It will be closed for our upcoming trip, so maybe next time. The salad and toffee cake look delicious.

Yachstman looks fabulous!

We love brunch at Tusker House! It is by far my favorite character meal. Also, I appreciate that you drink before noon.

I'm glad we got to Liberty Tree before it closed for refurbishment and will miss it on our next trip. It's a great spot to grab a quality lunch and get out of the craziness of the park for a while. And did I mention the dessert is really good too ; )

LTT is one of our WDW staples. We will miss it in Sept because of the refurb... Told DH that just means we will need to get back

We've never eaten at Yachtsmen but since we are taking my dad this trip and all he has requested was a good steak we may try it out...

We also love TH - it's a must do most trips... Actually considering dropping it this trip because DH & DSs decided they wanted to go to a waterpark instead of AK... And since the waterparks open at 10 the 8am ADR is suddenly far less appealing...

I am usually not a buffet girl either (small appetite so it never seems worthwhile), but I scored a pre-park opening adr at TH, because DH loves to (over)indulge, but your review if reaffirming that this will be much more my style, as there seems to be a broader selection of items to choose from. So I can take a "small" bite of multiple foods and not get too stuffed!!!

I'm shocked I haven't offended you away yet so double welcome to you

:rotfl2::rotfl:

I am firmly committed to instilling my love of disney into her (her "first" trip was in utero) and she's clearly got the bug.

Yes! Good for you. I'm forcing my kid into loving Disney as well.:thumbsup2

J: Good except for the blue cheese

:confused3 What?!? Not a blue cheese fan?!

Me: No, just Disney we leave Thursday at 2. Happy Father’s Day

After that my phone quickly rang (I was traveling for work) and my stunned hubby commented that he’d never been so surprised.

That is awesome! So glad he was surprised and was happy about it.

Now onto Casey…I hadn’t told her either as there’s no chance she could keep a secret so the morning of the trip I told her when she woke up. It went a little something like this:

Super cute! :hyper:

Yep ladies and gentleman I’ve created a monster!!!

:worship:

a68254cf-5580-44a0-992d-d2a5054626b6.jpg

She's so cute with her suitcase. DM just bought DS a Mickey Mouse suitcase that i'm super anxious to use. Notice, i'm anxious to use it :rotfl:

Looks nice to me!

Finally it was time to EAT and after a quick (about ten minutes), but freaking hot walk (heat index of 100+)

I so wish we weren't big babies when it comes to heat. But we are and i'll fully admit that. I wish we could go in the Summer, he has Summer's off so it would be totally ideal. I just asked him now for the heck of it, if he'd want to go next Summer. "H*** no!", he said  Fine. I'll just go solo :thumbsup2

Meet the Ramos Fizz, Hendrick's Gin, fresh Lemon and Lime Juice Half & Half, and Agave Nectar topped with Soda Water.

Very interesting. Yeah that half and half threw me off a bit too.

I love, love, love pimento cheese.

:hyper: :hyper: Yes!

#GottaWorkOnHerInnerCritic

:rotfl: She'll get there someday.

At the recommendation of @Pfau I also got a side of collard greens.

I still haven't tried collard greens but really want to! I'm missing out, aren't I?

it did take $5.48 off the bill.

$5.50 towards a drink the next day :thumbsup2

she insisted on being all creepy single white female and staring me down for at least 20 minutes

:lmao::rotfl::rotfl2: This cracked me up!

And meeting a mouse and a duck dressed as gypsies (what kind of place is this BTW)

Should we not be having our kids like Disney so much knowing this is happening in the parks??

Cute!

We then headed over to the teacups for a quick whirl and as we were walking up to the end of the line saw a family climb over the gate, with a stroller in tow, saying they didn't want to walk to the entrance. Yes that would be the whole 30 feet or so from where they were to the entrance. Not surprisingly when we got to the next cast member they were told they couldn't bring the stroller in and this turned into a big brouhaha as they claimed they were allowed to enter with it. We proceeded to have to wait for one of them to leave the line to put the stroller away and then come back before we moved again. #WhyDoesBadBehaviorStillSurpriseMe

Wow. What's wrong with people?!

#SomeoneTakesTheirJobTooSeriously

Best hashtags. ever.

Those who have been to LTT, know that dessert isn't even an option here. You are obligated by law to order the most wonderful dessert in all of the world. Seriously, the bouncer at the door will arrest you and put you in disney jail if you don't order it. So without further adieu, here is the soon to be famous Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake in all her wondrous glory.

I haven't been to LTT.

:blush::duck:

But i'd like to point out that it's not my fault. It's all DH's! He's not interested. Again, I feel a solo trip coming up. ::yes::

After not so quick stops at Boardwalk, then Swan, then Dolphin, we finally got to Yachtsman about 15 minutes late.

I hate that. Can I be high maintenance for a sec and request that there be two boat routes: One for Boardwalk/Yachtsman and one for the 'non-Disney' resorts?! Is that too much to ask?

Reminded me of a funny quote: Becoming a vegetarian is a big Missed Steak

Love this! Perfect!

In honor of father's day we decided to splurge on Jason's favorite wine: Brunello di Monalcino. And boy was the splurge worth it. For those unfamiliar this is a type of Sangiovesse, that must come from a very specific area of Tuscany. This particular wine was nice and juicy at first, but had some good spice to it as it went down with some cherry undertones. It soften a bit as the night went on and was absolute perfection.

I'm sure you have, but have you seen the documentary, "Somm"? We just finished it about an hour ago and I loved it! Very, very cool.

This was without question, the single best charcuterie plate we'd ever had. While there wasn't a miss on the entire plate, my favorite was the truffled suckling pie which was creamy and truffley and decadent and utter perfection. Next favorite was the wild boar terrine, which was wrapped in bacon and had some nice spice undertones. I'm a huge liverwurst fan so it was a big hit in all its yummy irony livery goodness. Rounding out the rear, but still delicious, was the guanicale (which is cheek) which was done in a style of prosucitto and the chorizo which had a good heat to it.

Yay! I'm so glad you liked the board!

Being a "cheeky" little girl, Casey's favorite was the guanicale ; )

Look at the little foodie. Totally raising her right!

(I can't stand fat on meat so a filet is perfect for me)

I've been so back and forth lately. I always used to want filets, now i've been craving rib eyes. We went twice in 3 weeks to Ruth's Chris and every time, I needed to have that rib-eye in me #getyourmindouttathegutter

As soon as this was put down I was initially disappointed. The steak looked way overcooked for my medium rare liking and I saw a return in my future. But as soon as I cut in, a perfect medium rare befell me and I was in steak heaven. This was unquestionably the best steak I had ever had. The char I thought had overcooked it was actually a perfectly balance to the delicate red meat inside. It was melt in your mouth perfection that I'm drooling about even as I type this. The cabernet sauce was good, but the steak was so amazing it didn't need it. The mashed potatoes were decent, but nothing special. Only downside was I had to share ; )

That's what I thought when I saw the pic too! So glad that it was just a good char and not overcooked.

Like mine we question the temperature of Jason's given the dark char, but it was a perfect medium rare and he, like yours truly, declared it the best steak he'd ever eaten. His steak was perfectly marbled and while it had a bit more bite to it than mine was tender none the less.

AWESOME!!!!

On the other hand, that perfect little luge of bone marrow was rich and buttery and went amazingly well with the brioche. For those who have never tried it it may sound odd, but it is truly amazing.

I've always wondered about this. It kind of throws me off (the name just sounds incredibly weird) but i'd be down to try it after your description.:thumbsup2

Aw! I kinda want one now!

This was bomb.

The African Bloody Mary with vodka, Loaded Bloody Mary Mix, and spicy African berbere sauce garnished with berbere-rubbed beef jerky, a celery stalk, carrot, and parsley. I have no idea what loaded bloody mary mix implies or what berbere sauce is, but that really didn't matter because they apparently mean we are really darn good and you should have at least two per visit!

But the Bloody Mary's are bomber. That's a word and i'm sticking to it:snooty: Really though, the Dawa Bar has awesome Bloody Mary's.

I love the difference between your plate and Jason's :rotfl2:

Aka we got to enjoy a second bloody mary (don't judge)

Never!

So to recap for those, like me, who may not be a fan of character meals or buffets in general, Tusker House is worth consideration. The food is table service quality and the unique offerings really make it stand-out

I really wouldn't mind trying TH again (if you recall, DS did NOT enjoy it!) but especially at the time you guys went. I'll have to keep that in mind.

Kari you are my sister of snobbery towards buffets. There's just no great way to prepare food for the masses to be left in warmers for an indefinite amount of time. Glad that Tusker House did a pretty good job and you got those cute pictures of Casey with the characters.

I love Tusker House. We are trying Boma and Yak and Yeti so we are skipping it this trip. My favorite thing was the corned beef hash with (I think) cornbread topping. It was so good to me. I also agree with you on the late breakfast time slot. Loved trying both!
Yeah, I was a big fan of the corned beef too but that beef bobtie is usually my favorite. Curious to see what you think of Boma. We've never gone as I figured it is similar to Tusker, but I"d be curious how true that is. Hope you enjoy Yak n Yeti. We've done it once and really liked it. Hopefully that carries though on this next trip.

Such a pretty shot. My hubby is a runner too and though he wasn't with us last time we went to WDW, I looked around a bit and saw some amazing places I'm sure he will like to run next time we are there!
Yeah, Jason is already plotting his potential Poly running spots as he has a 10K right after we get back. Me I'll just stick to the 7 or 8 miles we do walking all over Disney every day ; )

That is really cool. Do you happen to know if that bead thing is a permanent fixture? I think my DD would really like that...was it expensive? Crowded? And can you possibly give me an idea of the location? (I know...I'm not demanding at all lol)
I think it is permanent. We just happened upon it and there was no one there (they'd only been open 30 minutes or so) so we jumped right in. It did look like they had a sign up sheet if they were crowded. I think Casey's was around $20 total. You pay by the inch for the thread and then for the beads which are varying prices. It was in front of a store (don't recall the name, I think it had mercantile in the name) right across from the Russel and Doug meet and greet. Your daughter would probably love it. I know mine did ; )

I'm glad you posted this because I was a bit worried that your place looked delicious but somewhat exotic...and my DD doesn't do too much exotic...so...her plate would be more on the Mickey waffle and bacon side...
I would definitely say the "normal" outweighed the exotic. Clearly I have a love for the ladder, but they have something for everyone's tastes.

yum! we're not into eggs so we're definitely having lunch at Tusker House in Sept! can't wait! thanks for your review & pics! :thumbsup2
Hope you have a great lunch! Can't wait to see how yours goes.

I 100% agree with your opinion on Tusker House. I don't dig buffets in general but this one won me over. Jungle juice is a bonus. I haven't been for lunch but we may need to try a late breakfast/early lunch sometime. Good idea!
Glad to see I'm in good company ; ) We've done a 1045 breakfast a few times and have always hit the "turn" to lunch.

I'm so glad I have Dis friends who help fuel my vacation drinking habits ; ) Love the margarita pool side. Our plane next month lands at 9:30. Gotta see if the Poly is serving Lapu's before noon. Go big or go home ; )

You know I'm all about that No Pants life. :thumbsup2
I never thought about it before, but Donald is kinda your no pants soulmate :rotfl2:

OMG, IT'S SO PRETTY.
Meat is pretty, oh so pretty, so pretty and meaty and bright....

Meat meat meat meat meeeeeeeat! :bitelip: *rawrs like a T-Rex!*
I'm gonna go out on a limb Billie but I think you may like meat. Otherwise you're just really excited about tour T-Rex meal ; )

Is it wrong that these two pictures turn me on a little? :scratchin Seriously, that looks AMAZEBALLS.
You and me both!

I both admire and despise people who work out in the morning at Disney, then walk the parks all day. Like... How? WHY? :confused3 Inconceivable!
I admire, but largely despise my wonderful hubby for it. I love the man but his need to run while my **** sleeps before we both collectively go walk at least 7 miles that day is unquestionably inconceivable.

Super jelly. Last year, I had a 10:45am booking here, expecting to catch the switchover from breakfast to lunch. At 11:30 they still hadn't switched! I just gave up on waiting, and went about my day. Maybe next time! :cutie:
Wow, can't believe you didn't get the switch that late. This was our third 10:45 reservation and we've gotten lunch each time.

We had a 10:45 reservation and they started to do the switch sometime after 11.

Pfft. You aren't doing it right if you're not having a Bloody Mary on the plane!
Even better idea. Someone call the airlines and order up bloody marys for me and @JKSWonder :drinking1

How does tusker house compare with Boma?
I've never done Boma, but I've heard they are pretty similar. Boma of course doesn't have the characters and I've heard they also have more options, but it's apparently done at the same food quality level as Tusker.

I always get a filet and DH usually gets a filet. It is our favorite cut of beef. :)
We haven't eaten at the Yachtsman lately. We are pretty much spoiled by the delicious beef we have here in the Midwest. :)
Yeah for filet lovers  No midwest beef spoiling for us on the East Coast, so we gotta take what we can get ; )

We'll be having dinner at Boaties in just two weeks from tomorrow. And DH suggested we eat at Artist Point on our short, three night trip. It will be our second time eating at that restaurant and we are really looking forward to it. :)
Let me know what you think of Boaties and POFQ. Curious to hear your experiences. We've done Artist Point once and really enjoy it too. We're staying at the Poly this trip so not sure if we'll get back there next month, but I'm already planning on WL and Artist Point for our next trip ; ) Missing my lodge.

Definitely try LTT lunch when you can. It's a great respite from the parks and you can't beat the ooey gooeyness of it all ; ) Sadly they don't serve drinks at all, let alone before noon, so thankfully there are Tusker's in the world to keep this girl happy.

Love using LTT refurb as an excuse to get back. I'll have to try that one too.

Definitely consider taking your Dad to Yachtsman. I know my Dad would have been in 7th heaven.

Yeah, it sounds like Tusker may not be a great option before a waterpark, but maybe Boma since its at least close to Blizzard Beach?

Loved your reviews on yachtsman and Tusker House!

You're on vacation! There are no rules for drink appropriate times!!
Thanks so much. I'll drink to that :drinking1

Uhhh, 9 pages already?!? Holy moly!
Says Miss. 40+ Pages :worship:

I am usually not a buffet girl either (small appetite so it never seems worthwhile), but I scored a pre-park opening adr at TH, because DH loves to (over)indulge, but your review if reaffirming that this will be much more my style, as there seems to be a broader selection of items to choose from. So I can take a "small" bite of multiple foods and not get too stuffed!!!
Yeah, Tusker really is perfect for trying lots of things and not getting too full. I think both you and hubby will leave happy ; ) And if not just have another bloddy mary.

Yes! Good for you. I'm forcing my kid into loving Disney as well.:thumbsup2
Forcing, highly suggesting, smashing to down their faces. It's really a fine line isn't it :P

:confused3 What?!? Not a blue cheese fan?!
He does like blue cheese, just on his chicken wings and not his steak.

She's so cute with her suitcase. DM just bought DS a Mickey Mouse suitcase that i'm super anxious to use. Notice, i'm anxious to use it :rotfl:
Better get on that next trip. If for the rolling his mickey suitcase through MCO photo alone ; )

Coming from Cali I can see where you are coming from, but from us East Coasters suck with humidity 24/7 all summer long it really isn't that bad. If you hit the parks at opening and take a break in the afternoon it certainly is bearable. Let me know if I need to have a convo with your hubby to get him on the summer side of disney ; )

I still haven't tried collard greens but really want to! I'm missing out, aren't I?
Yes, you really are. We gotta southern your West Coast up a bit!

Yes I am very cute, but thanks for noticing :-)

But i'd like to point out that it's not my fault. It's all DH's! He's not interested. Again, I feel a solo trip coming up. ::yes::
Well if LTT isn't an excuse for a solo trip I really don't know what is.

I hate that. Can I be high maintenance for a sec and request that there be two boat routes: One for Boardwalk/Yachtsman and one for the 'non-Disney' resorts?! Is that too much to ask?
No high maintenance involved, its annoying. And on the busses, The Swolphin was 2 stops. Drove me crazy when we stayed at Boardwalk.

I'm sure you have, but have you seen the documentary, "Somm"? We just finished it about an hour ago and I loved it! Very, very cool.
No, I actually hadn't heard of it. Just mentioned it to J and he said a few folks at his work had said it was really good too. Gotta check it out. And if we're swapping movie recco's about wine, another really good one is Bottle Shock. Its fiction and not a documentary, but a great excuse to drink some wine and watch a movie.

I've been so back and forth lately. I always used to want filets, now i've been craving rib eyes. We went twice in 3 weeks to Ruth's Chris and every time, I needed to have that rib-eye in me #getyourmindouttathegutter
Oh my mouth is totally in the gutter. But no judgement even if it was a ribeye ; )

I've always wondered about this. It kind of throws me off (the name just sounds incredibly weird) but i'd be down to try it after your description.:thumbsup2
Give it a whirl if you have an opportunity. If you go to Vegas again anytime soon, Cut the Wolfgang Puck place in the Venetian has the absolute best I've ever had.

But the Bloody Mary's are bomber. That's a word and i'm sticking to it:snooty: Really though, the Dawa Bar has awesome Bloody Mary's.
That's a word and I'm gonna start using it. Just think a year from now it will be all over pop culture and you can say you started it right now.

I really wouldn't mind trying TH again (if you recall, DS did NOT enjoy it!) but especially at the time you guys went. I'll have to keep that in mind.
Yeah, I remember your son wasn't a fan but if he starts to warm to the life size cartoon characters coming at him ; )

Kari you are my sister of snobbery towards buffets. There's just no great way to prepare food for the masses to be left in warmers for an indefinite amount of time. Glad that Tusker House did a pretty good job and you got those cute pictures of Casey with the characters.
Glad to know I'm not the only one. We've done several of the character buffets thinking Casey would like them and finally came to the conclusion that no amount of characters can make up for the poor food and exorbitant prices.

It will be interesting to see if the menu changed at Artist Point since the new chef came on board. I'm not looking at the menu until I get there. We love the WL and are taking a short trip in January.

I received some exciting news this morning. Our daughter, son-in-law, grandson age 8 and granddaughter age 6 will be joining us for part of our October trip. And the first ADR she made was for Tusker House. She could only get a reservation for four but we'll keep looking for a table for six or just plead with them to let us join the family. I can't wait. :)

We also love Tusker House buffet! It's the only one we do. I'm not a fan of any other buffet.
