I had a good deal on a Mid SUV with Alamo (using Costco/ we are members), for $199 all in, April 23-30. I was able to change my flight down on SW to 4 hours earlier and save some $$. Realized an hour later, that my great car rental rate was in jeopardy.
I know, people say just log in and see what the new rental rate would be with the new times. This was with Costco, where you cannot make changes online. Re-booking gave me 2-3X that $199. Once before, I had a similar situation, with a flight change effecting a car rental pick up.
BOTH times, I did GREAT calling Alamo. 888-826-6893 NOT calling Costco. The first time was only an hour, and there was NO increase in price. This time, the representative said, oh there will be an increase. I held my breath........ it is now $217 he said, do you want me to make the change now? I said YES YES!
That is completely fair, $18 more for 4 hours. So, do not despair if you have a GREAT rate locked in, sometimes if you call, and not use the websites, you can get the rental companies to fix the pickup/dropoff times without triggering a large increase. (and like I said, you need to call the rental company, not Costco, BJs, etc). I am not saying this always works, but it did for me, 2 out of 2 times.
I tend to (sometimes) switch flights on SW because it's free.
