ADHD Meds-Side Effects?

FYI,

I have been told that when taking these medications you should avoid citrus products. It lessens the effect of the medication. DS loves orange juice but knows he cannot drink it in the morning before school. He gets a big glass when he gets home. According to our psychiatrist they use vitamin C to flush the system out when there is an overdose of these meds so it would make sense that it somehow dilutes the effect.

Lanshark,
That's interesting info, nobody told me that:confused: . DS doesn't drink OJ but he does drink Sunny D, I wonder if I should eliminate that during the week.Hmmmm.

Cyndilou01, tried your pill swallowing trick today but it didn't work for him. I ended up just doing what I've been doing by giving it a little push into the back of his throat.

Any other great pill swallowing stories out there?

I am less worried than I was yesterday but I'm hoping for consistency. I hope that the good reports continue and yesterday wasn't just a fluke. I won't feel confident until we have a week or so of good reports.::yes::

Thanks all for keeping the dialogue going:chat: I enjoy having a sounding board for my thoughts and concerns.

I've never heard of the citrus thing before. DH takes his Concerta with orange juice every morning and it works just fine. Maybe it's just certain meds?! That's one to ask the pharmacist about.

My mom worked with special ed kids for 20+ years. They always put the pill in some peanut butter for the kids. Not sure if that would work with Concerta since it is kind of large?!

tkd lisa-I read your post about the side effects and today when I was watching a commercial for strattera, they named every one. Sorry it isn't working for you.

Yep, it even mentions on the leaflet that comes with your prescription that it is not recommended to take "those" pills with any kind of acidy type drink.

First I have to say I have not read all the responses, but based on how you described your son I thought I would suggest looking into SID or sensory integration dysfunction. It mimmicks adhd in many cases. The best book I ever read was called The Out Of Sync Child- and it deals a lot with the whole fidgeting issue. Basically with our son he needs to sit on an air pad, have a theraband around his desk to get deep pressure feedback and many other little accomodations or he would get up and fidget/ crawl around etc. to get the needed feedback. He is allowed to stand or lay on the rug to do written work and he chews gum to help keep on task. I know that a lot of these things probably don't make any sense until you really learn about sensory integration, but if you have any questions or want additional info let me know.
Good luck.

sorry it did not work for him, I hope in time he can learn to swallow by himself I know that must be frustrating for both of you.
