Have any of you had your adenoids removed as an adult? How was the recovery? Any complications? Results of any biopsies??

From what I've read, it's kind of rare for an adult to need to have their adenoids removed but mine have a tumor growing next to them that needs to be removed, and I'm not Googling it anymore (results such as cancer, lymphatic cancer, leukemia, etc) so as not to freak myself out any further.... so... thought it'd be safer to just ask here if anyone has experienced this?

Thanks in advance!

Not me, but my ds did at 18... had it on New Years Eve (insurance!) - recovery was ROUGH! He lost 20+ lbs over 2 weeks. He started at his university around 2.5 weeks after surgery, though, so those 2 weeks were intense, but over quickly. It sounds like you must have it, so on the up side, if you want to lose weight, you will!

I had tonsils and adenoids out when I was 22. It was very painful and I had to stay 2 nights post op in the hospital for pain control as well as bleeding. Best thing for me though as no more strep or abscesses or tonsillitis. Sorry if it scares you. I hope the tumors turn out to be nothing but benign growths. Make sure you lighten your schedule for a week to 10 days post op too just in case you are not feeling up to doing things. Good luck- let us know how you did.

My son, my nephew and niece all had their tonsils and adenoids removed in their early 20's. They all suffered with repeated infections and eventually their tonsils or adenoids, not sure which, enlarged calcified and wouldn't go back to normal. For every one of them the recovery was unpleasant. Couldn't eat much for awhile. But also for every one of them, they finally stopped getting tonsilitis, sinus infections, snoring in a very bad way and in my son's case didn't get pneumonia every winter. My son hated the procedure but when his cousins were considering it strongly suggested they get it done. They all had to have biopsies. I worried a bit about my son's but all were fine.

I had my tonsils and adenoids removed in my early 30s. I was getting frequent strep infections and finally got an abscess, which was highly unpleasant. I did have a rough couple of weeks and lost my sense of taste for a couple months, but in the long run it was well worth it. It's been almost 30 years and I haven't had an infection since.

I was 21 when I had mine removed due to repeat bouts of tonsillitis. I ate baby food and other soft items for about a month. I was in college too and I lived off mashed potatoes and really soft noodles. I lost weight too. Well worth it in the long run.

Thanks for all of the replies! I appreciate them :)

I won't be having my tonsils out, just the tumor growing on my adenoids. I guess it will make it easier regarding pain without having my tonsils out, too. I was just wondering if any adults had only their adenoids removed.

My surgery is a week from today. And losing weight would be a good thing. LOL

Thanks again all :)
