Adding-on: Same or Different Home Resort?

Oh gosh, we caught add-onitus fast.

We’re halfway through our welcome home stay and thinking about adding another 150 pts.

So to remind folks…we:
- stay in nothing less than a 1-bdrm
- love the newer layouts (PVB Tower, VDH etc)
- do not like split stays

For these reasons we’re thinking about doubling down on PVB so we can have that priority to book the limited number of 1/2-bdrms at the 11-month window.

But I’m curious why others have multiple home resorts and perhaps I’m missing out on a benefit here!

It sounds like more PVB is the best choice. We have more than one home resort because we do split stays almost every trip.

So, I can book RIV and VGF at 11 months. We did buy SSR resale in 2017 because we got such a great deal.

We use those at 7 months to book any of our RIV or VGF nights still available and then free back up the others.

Or, we use them to upgrade to larger rooms!!!

We own at three resorts, all MK resorts, VGF, CCV and PVB for the Tower. We hate split stays as well. We like to move in, settle down and unpack. I will say for us we bought where we love the most and what draws us. VGF is our favorite and for us the place we would be happy staying all the time so the majority of our points are there. We added on at CCV because we wanted the Christmas feel at Thanksgiving and you need 11 month priority to get even the 1 or 2 bedrooms. The PVB add on was after we were looking at adding on at CCV and we went to the Moana 2 preview and saw the PVB 1bdrms. The 2 bathrooms in the 1 bedrooms sold our DD and instead of adding on at CCV we bought PVB to alternate between CCV and PVB every Thanksgiving.

I say all that to say if PVB feels like home to your family I say go for more points there. Your stays will be longer and your access to booking there will be better because if you ever need to walk a ressie you can walk less often. If you bought PVB because that was on sale and if is not your love resort I would consider an add on at another resort and then you can alternate trips at the two different resorts. CCV is even years for us and PVB is odd years. CCV has a deal right now on 150 points and lasts longer than PVB, I am not a big RIV person myself but many love it so if you want to be closer to another park RIV could be a good option for you. I am very anti FWC because they are always evacuated during hurricanes and have no washer and dryer in them but if they are your cup of tea that could be another good option.

Just know you cannot go wrong as long as you buy where you would be happy staying at.

This is my thought, exactly. It takes a lot of points to stay at the Poly. Keep it simple and buy more Poly in your current use year. No reason to make it complicated.

My personal strategy was to get enough at a favorite resort to stay 5-7 nights in a 2BR every year before adding on at a second resort.

The reason for another home resort is for booking priority. If have enough points to start using those ever other year, then pick a new home resort and treat those points the same as the other contract.

Otherwise if all you care about is points and priority at only one resort, buy more of the same.

Oh wow, I love your holiday use-case. We’re not rolling in points yet but maybe when we have “enough” for our big trips to PVB we can consider others for specific holiday trips.

Note that you can also do this with points at two different resorts by banking and borrowing. If there is a second resort that you really love, that might make sense.

I just think there is a lot of added flexibility to having more points at a single resort than smaller amounts of points spread amongst multiple resorts. Banking and borrowing can work too, but you lose some flexibility because those transactions are one-way streets, which can complicate things if you decide you want to switch things up in the 7-month period and don't need all the points you banked or borrowed.

Also, if you think you're going to want 2 BRs at Poly in the future, you should familiarize yourself with the 2 BR inventory there - according to https://dvcfieldguide.com/polynesian-resort-tour, there are 4 Penthose 2 BRs and 15 TP view 2 BRs (and all of those are lots of points), and the rest of the 2 BRs are lock-offs. Those 13 resort view 2 BR lock-offs are probably going to be impossible to get if you don't own PVB, and I suspect, even then, you're going to need to walk them or book very early in the 11-month window.

So, I'd say vote for buy enough points at PVB to secure a 2 BR before branching out.

The other nice thing about getting more at one resort is that you can have 11month priority for larger villas (by borrowing) if you should want to. That was my thinking with VGF. I wanted to have the possibility of booking a grand villa every other year.

My exact thought with both RIV and what I'm working on with CCV!

That's what I have for RIV. My AKV and Poly are basically supporters as we do like split stays but they definitely can't book a GV for a long time on their own without fully stripping the contract for 3 years. I do like knowing that if we REALLY want a GV for a prolonged period I can book almost a full week at RIV if I either bank or borrow a years worth of points. It's a good amount of points to have. Enough for a 1BR every year, enough for a 2BR almost every year, enough for a GV every other.

I think your plan is a sound one.

We opted for two separate resorts because we wanted easy access to a MK resort. OKW was the only DVC resort available when we became members. We love it, but knew we wanted a resort closer to one of the parks once the grandchildren started coming along. We briefly considered VWL (BRV), but since our OKW membership expires in 2042 (as does BRV), that didn’t seem to make much sense to us (although we love BRV).

We love BLT’s location and it has worked out well.

I think this is wise. The only reasons IMO to get a different home resort is that you want home resort priority somewhere else as well, or your current home resort is no longer under active sales and ridiculously expensive. Neither of those are true for you.
