Adding Memory Maker to package

So now that we have our BB package for next year booked we were looking at the Memory Maker for photos. Is it always something you have to pay for ahead of time and not something you can add to your package and include in the total cost? It appears you purchase it whenever and then it doesn't activate until you take your first photo? This would be a first for us and I am a little confused

You can add it at anytime. If you order more than 3 days ahead of your trip, you pay a discounted price. If you wait to add it less than 3 days it costs about $30 more.

ETA: yes, it doesn't activate till you take your first photo (ride photo, photographer, etc). You have a time limit on downloading the pictures (I think 45 days?) But that is only after you activate the download stage (different than taking picture stage).
