Add on vs Rental?

What's the benefits of buying add-ons, versus buying rental points as needed? We currently have only 150. So far, it's quite adequate for us. (no kids yet). DH kinda wanted to buy add-on, but I don't know if it's cost effective to do so.

Any advise?
