We are researching an initial purchase and I am trying to understand the intricacies of DVC. I am wondering IF we decide to purchase would we purchase the total we think we might need, based on the current charts, or would we consider purchasing less and adding on in the future.

What are the Pros and Cons for adding on of:
1) Additional contract at new resort same use year
2) Additional contract at new resort different use year
3) Additional contract at same resort same use year
4) Additional contract at same resort different use year.

I am thinking that we would want to combine contracts to book one stay.

I hope this even makes sense, as I am excited by the possibility but overwhelmed by the complexity as I research.
Thanks for your help.

Add ons thru DVC will have the same Use Year, with a minimum or 25 points. If you want a different Use Year the minimum thru DVC is 160 points. Resale is whatever is available.

If you are unsure of the number of points you will eventually require, I'd suggest buying the number of points that wil meet your needs and plan to add-on in the future.

While the points needed for a stay can change in the future, the point charts have NOT changed since 1996 and I do not expect any changes in the near future.

The ONLY resort to experience any changes in the point charts is OKW, and that has not changed since 1996 (announced in 1995).

Enjoy! :)

I thought the point charts could not change for a week total. If they change s - th they would also have to change f -s right? I know they can change types of seasons but I didn't think they could change total week points.:confused3

The total number of points to book a "unit" for an entire year cannot change. A "unit" is defined by your POS. For example, it's a portion of a building at SSR.

In any event, the "no increase" rule is not by week.

I like to think of the rule as the total number of points to book every room in a specific resort for an entire year cannot change. For example, it means DVC COULD increase the weekly cost of a 1 bedroom in July. But it would then have to decrease the cost of other accomodations (doesn't have to be a 1 bedroom or in July) by the same amount. They could spread the decrease across weekdays or weekends or both - up to them.

I don't worry about it - I agree with Doc and do not think a reallocation will happen in the foreseeable future.

As Carol noted, there is no restriction regarding making changes to the points required for a week. DVC could raise week night requirements for a studio and
lower weeknight requirements for a GV and still keep the total points needed for the year in balance. When the points were reallocated at OKW for 1996, studios were primarily affected by raising the points needed and GV's were lowered a little - mostly on weekends - but these changes were not uniform across the board for all seasons, as some did not change at all.

As Doc mentioned, the only change ever made was at OKW beginning with the 1996 use year.

If you really want to see what happened, click the link below and download my DVC-Chart program.

Run the program and select OKW. Then go and look at the point chart for 1995. Flip back and forth between 1995 and 1996 and you can see the changes that occurred.

As for future changes, that's unlikely. The purpose of different point structures between room types and seasons is to balance resort occupancy throughout the year. Weekend points are higher than weekdays for example, to discourage those members who live close to WDW from grabbing all the weekends, leaving those who want to stay a week or longer unable to get a full week. (If I lived 100 miles from Diseny, and weekend points cost the same as weekday points, you'd better believe I'd be booking lots of weekends, and so would others....:cool1: )

Ditto for the point structures for the various seasons.

That said, DVC by now has a good feel on how to set up point charts to balance things out so occupancy stays relatively consistent all the time. Thus you'll probably not see any need to change the point structures in the future. It would take a drastic change in member's vacation habits, resulting in a major imbalance in resort occupancies, to necessitate another point chart restructure.
