Add-on direct and a different use year

From what I read, a new use year gives you a new member number. I’m not bothered by that at all. What I’m curious about is whether I can add-on direct with a use year different from my current use year. For example, my use year is October. Can I ask Disney to add-on 50 points direct with a use year of February? That’s not really an add-on to my existing contract (and I know there are less strict low point add-on rules for current members).

I know some people don’t like to split up use years, but I’d be looking at going to the same resort (VGF) during the same month of every year (September). That’s the plan, at least. I don’t want to bump up against expiration every year if I can avoid it.

If your plans are to go in September I would pick a UY other than February as the banking deadline is Sept 30th. I know you are still in the window to bank but if you buy direct they will give you current years points too so if you picked (have to buy before the end of March) April or June or Aug UY you would get 2020 points too which make your contract loaded vs if you buy Feb which is already into using 2021 points you would just get the 2020 points. They will bank them even though it’s past the banking deadline when points are purchased directly from Disney as a courtesy.

ok, thank you. I just picked February as an example but I should have given it more thought. However, it sounds like I can purchase direct with a different use year than my own, right? If so, I’ll keep your comments in mind as I select a year. I appreciate the feedback.

I called my guide back in December with a similar question. I have Feb UY at PVB and wanted to add on 75 points at AKL with Aug UY. He said that this was a new membership and could not add on less than 100 points, unless it was under current membership (Feb).
I ended up going resale with CCV Aug UY and waiting to sign contracts.

When buying a different UY, it’s like you are a new member and they will treat it that way for meeting minimums.

In 2009, when minimum was 160 I did get them to sell me 130, but it needed special approval.

There was a post last week that a guide said some resorts will let you buy less than the minimum of 100 to become a member....125 is still the minimum for blue card..for some resorts so maybe VGF is one?

i do know if a few instances when they did indeed let new members walk away who did not want 100.

Being an owner, you may get them to bend but all you can do is call and ask!

Thanks - I’ll just keep the same use year then, as I don’t want to add on more than 50-60 points direct at this time. I don’t have the money to add more than that right now, and as I mentioned in other posts, low point totals at VGF, if I even find a contract, are going to be $200+ on resale.

You can always ask but I agree. The smaller ones are difficult. DH and I are discussing me buying more points and it’s down to 50, most likely at BLT or VGF as they are for December trips and he prefers that over more RIV right now.

I will go direct for sure since I want them to be used at RIV when he isn’t traveling with me!

I hear you. I don’t need anymore points because we live in Maryland, and trips require a flight, dog sitting, and vacation days. All 325 points we’ve purchased are resale. However, I’d like to grab some direct points to try RIV and future resorts. And at smaller chunks, the savings vs resale are usually only a couple $1,000. I just want enough so we can have a nice weekend and maybe combo it with a split stay for a longer weekend.

Along the same lines, I've a related question... If you add a new Use Year direct, I understand that it's technically a new membership. But, will they honor add-on incentives? Or will they only give you new member incentives? The incentives sometimes differ, and I wanted if this would make any difference.

I was given member incentives but it was back in 2009 so what happens today, I don’t know.

I just added on today with technically a new UY for me as I have a FEB UY but I’m just waiting on a gratuitous transfer that was passed on to us by my mother in law to load by MS as the deed was recorded on 3/9. I had to go back and forth with like 5 different phone calls with my guide to get what I wanted to do approved. I wanted a fixed week 52 studio but in my new April UY. I didn’t want the Feb UY because if I wanted to cancel right before the 31 day window I wouldn’t be able to bank the points. With an April UY I would be right at the banking deadline if I had to cancel. I had to explain my whole logic behind my decision and that I did not want a third DEC UY which they were insisting was in my best interest.
I was told by the guide that they are supposed to only sell to existing members their Current UY and the only exception is a fixed week, which can have a different one. I did get the current member pricing even though I got a UY I didn’t own already. I think if you are persistent and explain why you want a different UY at the end of the day they just want to make the deal.

Reading through all of that just made me grateful to have 1 uy to manage. I don’t think my brain can handle all of that 😅 But congrats cuz it sounds like you got lots of points coming your way!
