I put this on the community board on accident.

I saw this on that long thread about unoffical WDW rules- never say the secrets of WDW outloud. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that I've been guilty of this one! My problem is, I forget sometimes that most people don't have the same view of that sort of thing that I do. You see, I find it absolutely *fascinating* that the hydrolaters in the living seas don't actually move! I think it's sooo cool that it's just an effect because it looks and feels so real. Maybe it's because I'm a theatre person, but I *like* knowing how things are done, and I think it makes you appreciate the magic more when you know the secrets behind it. I'll try to keep my mouth shut next time though. hehe.

Don't worry, I'm very good about keeping the illusion of the characters when I'm in the parks though. They're still quite magical to me, and I even worked at WDW two years ago and saw them backstage all time!

I think that most "adults" realize that most of the things that happen are just show. It's the kids that usually are innocent enough to buy it hook, line and sinker. Having said that, my X was on the Skyway and realized for the first time that the subs at 20K leagues didn't actually submerge. She was totally floored and it ruined it for her.

I personally love to find out how everything works. I have taken the Keys to the Kingdom tour and was really disappointed that I didn't find out much of anything I didn't already know. The tour was worthwhile just because I could go backstage. It is amazing just how close backstage is to what you see within the parks.

It is better to keep the information to yourself because you really don't know how the person standing next to you will react. It could destroy the Magic for them.
:smooth:   :sunny:

LOL about the hydrolaters !!

When DH and I went to Epcot when the ride part of the living seas was still open. He was signed up for Dive Quest and had to meet the up with them outside the Epcot gate. I wasn't doing the dive so the CM told me about how long it would be to see DH in the tank. I asked him if There was a side way for me to get in w/o the ride and movie. He told me how to skip the movie, but I asked if the "elevators" were fake (they reminded me of 2000 leauges), and could I just walk in when people came out of the exit.

LOL he rolled his eyes told me they were fake, and I could get in that way, but to please not tell anyone. You guys won't tell on me will you?

THe funniest thing is that earlier, when DH and I were discussing how long it would take me to get in to see him he told me not to get into the "elevator" from the exit because what would I do if it took me to the basement!! ROTF!!!

Knowing the secrets doesn't ruin it for me, I just think how neat that they were able to give me the illusion:cool: !

We used to skip the movie and go in that way....just wait til someone exits and step in...kind of funny watching someones face as you get off...

Since we hadnt seen the movie in a while, we went in the regular way last year.

About the hydrolators...

I am embarrassed to say this, BUT, the first time I went on the hydrolators...I tried to pop my ears because of the depth change!! My husband nearly died laughing at me. There I am like a fool holding my nose and blowing my cheeks and opening my mouth really wide. I had no clue!!

What movie? All I remember were the hydrolators and the short ride through the tank.

Are you confusing this with Norway?

Some people like the *secrets*. Some don't.
As an example, we took the WS behind th scenes tour in January.
DH and I were disappointed that there was not much actual behind the scenes shown.
Someone else in our tour group was disappointed because there was behind the scenes, period.

There is indeed an (optional) movie that you can see before you board the hydrolators. It's quite outdated but nevertheless interesting.

I hate to be picky... but I belive the hydrolaters do acutally move. They just move a couple of inches. Just enough to give you the feeling that you experiencing movement.

Nope, it' just seems like they do. I waited at the exit, for people to get out. I got in as soon as the outside doors closed behind me, w/o another sound or movement the inside doors opened in front of me. It was kinda cool creepy to do it that way. was fun to see the people ( the ones who were getting off ouside and the ones who were waiting to exit inside) give me a double take.

we were there one time when both doors were open and you just walked right out without the doors opening and closing.

that is because it is a magical portal w/ tons of pixie dust. it seems like u walk right through, but u were magicly teleportaed up to the surface ;)

The floors are on hydraulics, and they move up and down (shaking motion) within a couple of inches... but ultimately the level doesn't change.

BTW, you can skip the film by going through the entrance, it's been like that for about 2 years. Enter through the entrance please.

Actually, although I tend to skip the other movies, (i.e.) Norway, I love the Living Seas movie, especially "The Deluge"

psst...to you *nosepluggers* - you guys DO know that they elevator for HM doesn't actually move - right? ;)

I'm one of the ones that doesn't want to know everything. I've read plenty about WDW and watched some of the behind the scenes shows, but that's it. I don't think I could ever take the Keys to the Kingdom tour. It's tempting, but I think once I saw Cinderella eating a tuna sandwich, I'd be disillusioned. I am interested in the building of the theme parks, but day to day behind the scenes activities don't interest me. I want the magic 100%!:D

Also, you all do realize that the elevators on the Tower of Terror don't move either, right?

Just to clarify, the Stretching rooms at Haunted Mansion (WDW) are intended to give the illusion that they are stretching, which they indeed do. In CA, the effect is achieved by an elevator, which is necessary for logistical reasons, but at no time has the experience at WDW ever been advertised as an elevator.
