Accident on Pirates?

I know we don't know what happened but....WHO lets their child lean over far enough to get their hand in the water????

Sadly, lots of them do... and it's not only the children who dip their hands in the water because I've seen countless adults do it to

Great parents, that's who...

I see more unattentive parents than attentive ones anymore and at WDW it seems to be worse than just about anywhere. Sadly, it doesn't surprise me that a parent would ignore their child to the point of this happening. If it turns out to be true, poor kiddo, what a horrible accident.

Last year we went to DTD and saw a child around 3 or 4, sleeping in a stroller alone by the toy store. The area around the train area where you an sit. My MIL and I stayed to make sure we were not seeing things and maybe the older brother or sister was on the train. Well 20mins later no parent. It was a nice breezy day so we were relaxing. WE finally wanted to leave but did not want to leave child alone. Finally got security to let them know. We went to eat at EOS when we were done security was still with the child.

Sometimes accidents happen because of parental negligence. Sometimes they just happen and you don't get a second to stop it unfortunately. We don't know what happened here.

But kids' brains aren't fully developed yet and they do stupid, reckless stuff that you can't always anticipate.
Hell, the same can be said of adults with, more or less, fully-developed brains.

If this proves to be true, it's a shame, but it doesn't automatically mean the parents are neglectful monsters.

So great parents never have anything happen in the blink of an eye? They have their eyes constantly on their child and never look away to tend to another child or something else? We don't know how old this "child" is.

very true...as a parent, and one that tends to hoover, I've been just a step away when my child has fallen or broken something in a store. Things can happen in a split second.

Keep your hands and arms inside the boat - there are reasons for that.

If it did happen, WDW is not trying to "hush" it up. It's that it just happened. It's going to take more time to hit media outlets. With an injury that requires transportation to a hospital and a police report, that is GOING to become public whether Disney wants it to or not.

OSHA now requires all theme parks and carnivals to report all accidents so Disney can not just keep it quiet. I think you are right and its just too soon and not as big of an accident that would cause breaking news.

Not to mention, most of the "theme park" media are currently covering Harry Potter as that's a national story.

unfortunately, a lot of parents. My children, now 25 and 18, will vouch for the fact that I am strict and behavior I see in the parks amazes me. If you are a parent you need to be responsible for your child and supervise the child's behavior, but too often this does not happen and even if there is a rule about children sitting on the inside, people feel rules do not apply to them. It is unfortunate if a child was hurt but let's hope Disney does not receive the blame if it happen from bad behavior.

I'm interested to hear what really happened but I'm not too quick to condemn the parents. I had 2 kids---both of whom were extremely well behaved-- generally speaking; however, even a well supervised, normally docile child can run amok and get into a dangerous situation in a split second.

I think I'll reserve my rocks for the parental stoning until I hear the injured child wasn't adequately supervised.

I know a lot of kids act like heathens on vacation (ok, sorry, most heathens I know have a lot of respect for others) and the parents like to believe that being on vacation means they get a break from parenting also...but it also is very possible for the most well behaved, very properly raised kid with very attentive parents to make a momentary snap impulsive action...and I really don't think anyone on here thinks parents must stare constantly at their kid while on a ride, never looking at any of the ride themselves, just in case they suddenly reach for the water. Doesn't matter how many times you are told to keep your arms in the boat, kids don't always follow the rules...and if you think yours do, please let me know your secret (or your drug of choice that gives you that hallucination).

Could have been a split second dumb choice, like kids make everyday, good kids and bad. It is true their brains aren't developed yet, DW hates when told by a child therapist (DD had some bullying issues) that we can't expect every choice to be logical in a 13 year old. No matter how smart she seems to be.

If true, I feel sorry that they will have to deal with this for the rest of their life, and that it ruined a great family vacation.

Oddly when I look at the ride times on my iPhone it says it is open, but them almost half the other rides say closed, so might just be my app being buggy.

Guys, we've had a unconfirmed rumour, nothing substantial, just a load of Chinese whispers.

So before we blame, the kid, the parents, Disney, god, whoever. Lets see if anything actually happened and if so what.

If the ride is open now, I'm going to say nothing major happened. I can't imagine they would re-open any ride where a child lost a finger.
