Accident on Pirates?

I know we don't know what happened but....WHO lets their child lean over far enough to get their hand in the water????

I see more unattentive parents than attentive ones anymore and at WDW it seems to be worse than just about anywhere. Sadly, it doesn't surprise me that a parent would ignore their child to the point of this happening. If it turns out to be true, poor kiddo, what a horrible accident.

Me, too. I lost the end of my finger when I was 11 thanks to a door and an argument between me and my brother, and just that is rotten enough. Losing the whole thing? Horrifying.

There's literally nothing but those two tweets. I think this is made up.

very well could be that this 'kid' is in fact 12 or 13? Might not be a 'kid' like we are all thinking.

I'm thinking that too, a small child wouldn't be able to reach far enough down.

Why would someone make it up? Plus also report it closed? It may not be major enough to make breaking news.

You would be surprised! My DH, DS and step-mom were on Splash on June 11 and had to get taken off the ride after it shut down. Why did it shut down you ask?? Because a woman helped her child get off right before going up the hill for the big drop. They saw it happen. The woman helped the child out and then followed the child off the ride. She left the other child she was riding with inside the boat. As soon as they stepped out, the ride stopped. They ran up the steps going who knows where. A few seconds later, the second child gets out on their own and follows them up the steps. Someone else here on the board was on the ride the same night and said her DH saw the woman laughing about stopping the ride.

I hope this story is just a rumor and they everyone is okay!!

How did they get out? Isn't that why they put the safety bars in?

I saw this on twitter from the Disney Blog, too. That would be awful. I hope it's not true. Poor kid :(

I'm not saying necessarily that someone made it up, but maybe someone heard there was an accident and got the details wrong. It seems unlikely a child would lose a finger on a ride at WDW and it wouldn't be all over twitter.

Goodness I hope it isn't true. Just because there are not many reports, doesn't mean anything, I would think they are keeping it quiet for now. The fact that the ride is currently closed makes me think it's true.

If i recall correctly, CM's make kids sit in the middle, pretty sure thats the norm
What if it is a non peak time and it is just you and your child on the entire boat? How can the child sit in the middle. I am sure there are adults dumb enough to put their hand in the water even if they are on the outside.

Give me a break. Seriously...have you no human empathy? Gross.

Bulletin! You do not have to be "ignoring" your child for your young child to suddenly and impulsively do something you did not expect - like running into the street, jumping off something, leaning back in a chair, hitting someone, or - yes! imagine! - reaching over the side of a boat. (And if your child, like two of mine, has ADHD, they'll do things like this even more often.)

Accidents happen. Not because society has gone to hell in a hand basket and all parents are crap (because accidents are a totally new thing, that just started happening in the last few years). If anything, most the parents I know are OVERLY attentive, hovering over their children. But kids' brains aren't fully developed yet and they do stupid, reckless stuff that you can't always anticipate.

I hope the child is okay,

but seriously if people would just listen to and abide by safety messages this kind of thing wouldn't happen. They don't say to keep your hands inside the boat and to have adults on the outside for their health. :confused3 Accidents happen, but Disney is pretty good on taking steps to prevent them.

It doesn't surprise me that things like this are happening these days (not necessarily often, but more frequently). Every time I'm at WDW I see kids running around like maniacs with parents nowhere to be found/distracted/not caring. I had a little one climb all over an empty chair at my table in one of the food courts while the adults all talked amongst themselves without a care in the world.

Usually CMs will direct children to sit in the middle on boat rides but I've seen many a person attempt to switch...some causing overhead announcements to sit down, others getting away with it. I'm guessing this was probably the latter. Never really understood why it's apparently so hard for people to watch their kids, especially in such a large theme park. :sad2:

This is how I feel as well.

It is also possible that a child made and impulsive and bad decision and it has nothing to do with being raised by negligent and inattentive parents. Sometimes accidents are just that. Kids are kids and make bad decisions and if this is in fact a 12 yr old, he may have thought maybe I will just try to touch the water at exactly the wrong moment. Doesn't make him a bad kid or the parents bad. Rules are there for a reason and sadly people learn that the hard way. Sometimes the end result is as severe as death or a life changing injury, other times it is just a close call.

I watched a guy die (at least I think he died) at Disney (I was on my DCP) and it never made it outside the parks. Many people have told me they don't believe me and it was made up. The guy was out cold after the W&D half marathon and people had been doing CPR on him for 5 minutes while Reedy Creek got there to take over. I am pretty sure he died but maybe he didn't since I never heard about it again.

I could see it being exagerated, hurting a finger vs losing a finger. But I think something happened.

You know how kids are always fooling around, climbing on things and goofing around. I could see an older kid sticking his hand out to touch the water not even thinking. Parts of the ride are dark, the parents might not even notice, it happened so fast.

I was wondering why there was no wait time when I checked online earlier.

Personally to me just because it is not all over online news right now means nothing. No offense to the child but it is a (alleged) finger lost not a life. Not the biggest news to broadcast even if it is life changing to the family. Not to mention I can see and believe that WDW keeps alot of negative things off the airwaves and hidden as much as possible even if they are not at fault.

While rumors and gossip are spread all the time that does not mean that you have to dismiss or discredit what anyone here says just because it does not have TMZ credits.
