Job with a 65% cut in pay and benefits?
Delphi (manufacturer of car acessories) was quoted as saying that the employees needed to accept a 65% cut because of competition from lower wage China.
I know people in other industries that are facing the same drastic cuts.

Would you:

Accept-The job is at least a job in hand

Quit- Because not enough to pay the bills so might as well get a new one right now.

Can't you hold on to the Delphi job until you find a new one? I think it is just awful what they are putting their employees through. Hopefully the big wigs are taking that 65% pay cut, too.

I would accept, so that I at least had $$ and benefits (COBRA is expensive) and look for a new job!

Sometimes there just aren't any good answers.

Its as the old saying goes, it is easier to find a job while you have one. Especially with the benefits. Cobra is at least twice if not more than you are paying now. Keep a little income until you can find something else, there are so many out there without a job at all. Better to stay put and not be out with nothing at all. Good luck to you. :sunny:

I would never quit a job until I had another one lined up--unless of course I was being emotionally abused or tormented or something. I understand that a 65% cut is a a form of abuse, that's not the kind I'm talking about. If you need a job, you should never up and quit.

My guess is that the 65% cut is mostly in benefits, not pay. I can't imagine them expecting people to take 65% cut in pay (unless they are cutting off all overtime or something like that). I'd keep the job until I could find another one. Are we talking about line workers here, though? I don't think that too many of the American automakers are hiring tons of people right now, unfortunately. They're all in the same boat...sunk by expensive benefits, pensions, healthcare obligations to retirees, etc.

I would accept only with the thought that a new job will be found asap!
Why quit and get no money or benefits?

Accept, and stay only until I found a new job.

Delphi mgt wants workers to go from 27.00/hr to 9.00/hr, plus pay for medical coverage. Mgt is not planning on taking a pay cut.

I would keep the job and start looking for another. This is a hard one, since your age, expenses and job skills are all a factor. BTW this is the way all companies will be going in the future.

Mgt is not planning on taking a pay cut.
That is not true.

Delphi Chairman and CEO Robert S. "Steve" Miller has agreed to work for $1 per year until the company emerges from bankruptcy, and a score of other top Delphi executives will take a 10 percent cut.

Let's keep things honest and accurate here, folks.

Using Delphi as an example here, not the actual company.
It seems evenly divided at 12 accept and 12 quit though most of the posts say accept.

Well after the pay cut if it is still more than what employers are paying in the area then I would stay otherwise I would stay long enough to find another job. The dilemia here is sometimes one employor pays way above others in the area doing comparable work. Heck even at a 65% pay cut they would be making more than most production jobs in the Florida area! I work for a pharmaceutical company and the production jobs starting now are only about 10.00 an hour! So it depends on the area and the ability to secure a job paying more. 27.00 an hour seems like a lot for a unskilled position!

What is the union's counter-offer?

It depends if I needed the $$ from the job at the time (or my family did). But even if I didn't need the cash, I would probably stay and look for another job.

Logical or not, fair or not, I also believe that you're often seen as a more attractive job applicant if you are currently employed. Sort of reassurance to a prospective employer that you are capable/employable/have a work ethic/whatever.

My DH is management in a union plant. Many times management takes a pay cut and the union does not. He also pays more for health insurance than union workers.

That being said, I don't think that the Delphi workers have much choice. There are not jobs that they are going to be able to take that will pay even what they are making with a 65% pay cut. In the areas that are industrial and union, good paying jobs are becoming scarce. But I don't think that anyone can live taking a 65% pay cut. In my area you see a rash of bankruptcy when the auto industry slows down. Many of these workers depend on making overtime. When the overtime stops they can't pay their bills. There is no way they can pay their bills taking a 65% pay cut.

Our family has adjusted to pay cuts that my DH has had. It is no where near what Delphi is considering but you just make adjustments. I don't think that the Delphi workers are going to be able to.

Accept job, look for another. My reason? It is "cleaning house" time at most companies. The chances of getting hired now is not good.

Heck, we are waiting on pins and needles here at my own home.
The firings are coming any day now!!!!
I can't shop, get my hair done, NOTHING! Saving all of our pennies and holding our breath right now.
