Just doing some research on this and figured that with so many of the Aussies away on September 14 (Election Day in Australia), that it might be worth posting this....in the spirit of DisCivic duty.

Early Voting for the September 14, 2013 Australian elections...

http://www.aec.gov.au/Voting/ways_to_vote/index.htm#early

Options:
1.You can vote in person at an early voting centre or any AEC divisional office in the weeks leading to the election on 14 September 2013. Details of early voting centres and opening times will be made available closer to the election period

2.To vote by post you must first submit an application to the AEC. Applications are expected to be available from mid-August and may be submitted until 12 September, the Thursday before election day. The AEC will send ballot papers to you when they are printed, from 26 August.

Based on the information on the AEC page, postal vote application forms will be available closer to 12 August, 2013.

I guess we wait until 12 August if we want to apply for a postal vote.

another thing to add to the ever growing list of things to do....i forgot all about it!:wave2:

Here to help! :rotfl2:

ETA - And in the unlikely event that a mod is doing a fly-by check, it is mandatory to vote in Australia. Anyone not voting gets fined. This really is a non-political thread and I posted it as a reminder to those travelling to remember to arrange for their vote before they leave.

they really like our opinion on all things....whether we want to give it or not...but really, try and show me an Aussie who HASN'T an opinion on things....:rotfl2:

Aussie having opinions? really?

:scratchin Can't say I noticed. Anyone else??

:rolleyes1

No. Not opinions. Points of view perhaps. Thanks for the reminder. Another thing on the to do list. Don't want a fine.

Now that is just annoying! :(

We arrive home on the 15th, yes so we miss the 14th. Register for postal voting.... that opens in August!!!! We will still be away in August. Register for overseas voting! Well we leave on the 13th! So the 14th we are in limbo, that missing day we get when flying home so can not vote at an overseas consulate that day!

So.... don't quite know what I am going to do :confused3

Do you think if I contacted the federal government they may move the election for me?:rolleyes1
Fat chance I know, but I could give it a go :rotfl2:

You could try. ;)

Perhaps you could wait for the 12 August and get a postal vote form sent to you in the mail. :goodvibes

But I won't be home to receive it :rotfl2:

I have just been doing some reading and there is a consulate in LA, they don't have the dates yet but they say that they usually open for voting two weeks before the election. So I would be able to do that!

Actually I can also just fill in a form to say I'll be overseas and get out of the whole thing. However I do want to have my vote, so will hopefully be able to do it in LA sometime :thumbsup2

Super! Another thing to add to the long planning list!

Maybe they could send it to you in the US?? But the Australian consulate in LA is probably your best option. :thumbsup2

Thanks for this PIO

Although not going to Disney - will be overseas too (Bali/ Singapore trip)

I'm pretty sure they will send you a postal vote package at an overseas address.

I get to vote on my birthday this year. Yay. Hopefully there won't be too much of a line at least!

Hmmm tricky....I always vote early anyway, so much more convenient! and less people waving pamphlets at me, which annoys me when I already know exactly how I'm voting.

I registered as an overseas voter one year when I was away for an extended time - It actually makes your voting optional, I.e. you can vote if you want but are not required to by law. Just remember to change it back when you return. Otherwise I would have suggested postal vote, but looks like even that is a problem timing wise.

Thanks for posting this! I'm most likely studying abroad for the second half of the year so will not be in Australia from July-December...so I'll need to investigate my options!

Thanks for this, I'd forgotten all about it. I think I might need a reminder mid August though...
