Absentee Voting for those Australians travelling on Sep 14, 2013 (Non Political)

My local MP has just advertised in our local paper that you can contact his office and request a postal vote now as the election will be held some time between 24 August and November. I interpret this to mean you should be able to lodge a postal vote now regardless that an election hasn't been called?

Though if we don't know who's standing in our electoral area yet how can we - actually that is very confusing now I think about it??

Oooh! That's interesting. I did a quick search online and there still isn't a form available on the AEC website.

It does say this:
To vote by post you must first submit an application to the AEC. Applications forms are not available until close to the time that writs are issued for an election, and can be received until 2 days before election day. The AEC will send ballot papers as soon as possible after candidate nominations close, some 2 weeks after the issue of writs.

Very interesting PIO. I heard on the news today that some Labour members are suggesting sometime in November. I wish we had set dates each cycle instead of whenever they jolly well feel like it :(

Come September, I won't care much. And if an election is called and held whilst I am away.....and I get fined for not voting, I'm soooo using this thread as objective evidence that I intended to vote! It's not my fault that they can't settle on a date and provide the early voting forms.

Exactly! If you are out if the country when an election is called and held how ate you expected to know what is going on?? It's not like the tv stations over there would put out public service announcements telling Aussies to vote. And what if you were in the middle of nowhere back packing where there is no tv or power or phone reception???

Oh joy! :crazy2:

I'm here on polling day. My care factor on absentee voting is now officially sub-zero.

At least I won't have to worry about yet another form to complete.

Thanks for that. All done. Just have to hope that it arrives on the 26th of this month, because we leave on the 28th.

Hi sarefromoz. There is another form if travelling overseas where you can register dates of travel. If your form does not arrive in time they are already aware of the reason.
