Hi,
I saw the DVC point chart and calculator to use when figuring out how many points we would need if renting points from someone. I am not a DVC member. Would it be possible to have a DVC member make reservations for me at one of the WDW HOTELS, not Villas? If yes, how would I find out how many points I needed?
Thank you.
Chris

It would be far cheaper to book the room through CRO. It uses a LOT of points to book the hotel rooms.:)

DVC points are much more economical to use at a DVC resort rather than non DVC resorts. So to answer your question, yes you may find some one willing to rent you enough points to stay at a non DVC hotel. But I ask the question why? DVC resorts are in the Deluxe catagory so in one sense it would cost you more money to stay at Port Orleans than it would at The Beach Club Villas. Three of the 5 on site DVC resorts are linked to the parks, either MK or Epcot and MGM. The other two are very close to downtown Disney. Good luck in you venture to rent, but i would suggest staying at a DVC resort....\

OK, thanks! Good to know. I have never rented points before. I'll go back to thinking about renting them for one of the villas. Thanks again! :)

I'm using OKW and PO French Quarters in value/adventure season on weeknights for this example.

POFQ- reg room-2 queen beds- $163 (including resort tax) thru CRO
same room @ $10 per point thru DVC rental- $160

Works out about even.

The thing is... for that exact same $160 rental you could be staying in a one bedroom vacation villa with a king bed, whirlpool tub, full kitchen, washer, dryer dishwasher, porch, 2 tv's... at either OKW or BWV standard view.

....

Not quite. POFQ has double beds. Moderates only have double sized beds.

What you have to remember about renting a DVC reservation from a member - it is between you and them, Disney will not intervene if there are problems. The member fully controls the reservation until the moment you check in. The non-member cannot contact MS to confirm the reservation. The member sets the terms for payment. Cancellation or changes may not be an option.

OK, sorry- double beds.:confused3 I was off by an inch or two on the bed size if that affects your decision. Was anything else inaccurate?

Not inaccurate, but you left out a lot.

Spend $160 for that room at POR and you get daily mousekeeping. You have CRO cancellation policies around that room. You are dealing with Disney which means that you aren't very likely to get scammed. You have even cost for the whole week.

Spend $160 to rent through a DVC member and you are dealing with a stranger on the internet. You have much stricter DVC cancellations to work with (plus the complications of the member's use year, etc). You have a timeshare room - which is very nice, but doesn't include mousekeeping. Yes, you have a washer and dryer and a kitchen and the jaccuzzi (never used in my DVC stays), but you have a king bed and a pullout couch instead of two queens - maybe you don't mind the pullout, maybe you do. You have to stay Sunday - Thursday for that rate.

Spent $400 for a condo on priceline and you get a whole seven day week in a two bedroom condo with a kitchen and washer and dryer - but its offsite.

All true. But none of that was ever asked so I did not put it in my answer. I just wanted to compare the resorts on a basic price comparison. These are all good things to consider.

To the OP, something to always consider when you are comparing cost. Renting points can a great bargain Sun-Thurs, not so much on Friday and Saturday night stays. Be sure to include that if you are staying a week.

So you would have no idea if a reservation was even made? Who's name is it in the member or the person renting points.

Most members will provide a copy of the confirmation sheet and the confirmation number. The member's name is on the confirmation.

So who's name is on the room keys? Sorry I've never rented points but an looking into it and I just figured everything would be in my name.

When you check in do they know you're not a member? I'm assuming them that you purchase tickets seperately.

Also, I've read that there's no mousekeeping during your stay, do they clean before your arrival and after and that's it??

The room and room keys would be in your name.

Tickets would be separate.

If you are staying 7 days or less, there is a trash and towel service on day 4. This includes fresh towels, soaps, etc, and removal of trash.

If staying 8 days or longer, there is a full cleaning on day 4 and trash and towel service on day 8. This cycle repeats every 4 days.

Day one is your check-in day.

DVC is a timeshare, not a hotel. Most timeshares have absolutely no housekeeping at all during a person's stay. For example, we also own Marriott and with them there's no housekeeping service at all during your stay.

With DVC, also if you wish, you can pay extra for daily service if you want it.

Eight nights, Bill, not eight days.

There are several ways to let you know the ressie is in your name.

One is to make the reservation in a conference call with the owner and MS. Generally, the owner would call, give the security info for their account, and then bring you into the call. The advantage of that -- in addition to peace of mind -- is that you can handle any details of specific requests, DME arrangements, DDP, etc, etc.

The other way is for the owner to not only give you the confirmation number, but to send you a copy of the confirmation letter. If the ressie is in your name, the letter will be addressed to the owner, but it will state that the ressie is made for you, and it will have your name, address, accommodations, number of nights, requests made at the time of the ressie, etc, etc. Be advised, though, that the actual letter sometimes comes several weeks after the ressie is made.

Of course, the entire ressie remains 100% in the control of the owner until you check in, so an unscrupulous owner could theoretically go through all of that and still cancel the ressie out from under you. However, DVC owners tend to be pretty decent folks, and I've never heard of that happening.

I've been reading the boards since I finally rented some points. I know this whole thing is a matter of trust, but is there a way to have a sticky on the rent/trade board to post unscrupulous renters and owners? Or at least a place to note that certain owners and renters are reliable?

Just wondering....

The Rent/Trade Board does not have a "feedback" section. While I don't mod that board, I can understand why this hasn't been allowed. Think of all the false feedback there is on other sites, like ebay. It could harm a reliable owner, and boost an unscrupulous owner. In truth, reports of "rentals gone wrong" have been extremely rare here. :)

Follow some common sense guidelines,
1) try to rent from someone with a fairly high number of posts, so there is some "history" as a poster
2) have in writing your agreement, payment due dates, cancellation policy, refund policy..anything that may affect the rental
3) have reliable and verifiable contact information for both the member and the renter.
4) Never pay via Western Union or any other method that does not require positive ID of the person receiving/cashing the payment.
