Do CMs that participate usually have a good selection on their lanyards to choose from? How do you go about initiating a trade? Anything else I should know? I've read the rules and know about the 'sharks and guppies'. Thanks guys!

Cm's have a variety of pins on their lanyards!!
Any where from some Rack pins to CM only lanyard pins, safety pins .
You never know sometimes you can find some limited Editions pins too!

Another place to go to learn about pins is To go to the Exposition Hall( on the right as you go under the Train station) in Magic Kingdom every Sunday -Wednesday at 1pm to Scoop Sanderson talk about pins and how to trade!! It s a very fun and informative session!!! Sometimes he plays games and interacts with the people!! Many regular pin traders attend but don'tbe over whelmed as Scoop is great even with the "New" People

Don't be afraid to ask questions no matter how dumb you think they are as someone might be afraid to ask the same question

here is a link to Scoop's info on Disney's official pin trading site!!http://psc.disney.go.com/eventservices/event_wdw3411.html

There's a HUGE variety of pins...I found a Tink cast lanyard pin at the very front of MGM on a CM lanyard...what a suprise! Then, there were all kinds of others. I was very tentative at first (this past trip was my first time trading), but everyone was very friendly..... Lots of fun! The only ones I didn't get a good look at were the CMs operating the rides - I didn't want to hold up the line just to look at the lanyard! :earsgirl:

In 2002 when we went to WDW my 4yr old DD was pin trading and the CM's initialized all the pin trading with her. They just came up to her and asked her if she would like to trade and they always suggested to her which one to take of theirs because they had special cast pins for her. She really loved this and will do it again this year when we go.

Don't count on finding any unusual pins on CM lanyards. After a few days of checking lanyards, you'll realize that for the most part you see the same pins over and over. I think pin sharks zip through the parks in the early mornings to snap up all the good pins. That's why they started having child-only lanyards.

My DS loves Figment and when we returned for our second ride of the trip he got to trade pins with Figment. Well it actually was a puppet but he had his own lanyard and the CM was very sweet. DS traded for a cool Tinkerbell pin (not collectable or CM but still cool to an 8 yr. old).

i love pin trading!!! it varies if the cast members have good pins or not. One time i traded a cast member a dvcm pin for a pon of sleeeping beauty castle pin that was given to cast members only!!! My brother has traded cast members for around 6 saftey pins. ttfn:Pinkbounc

I think the main thing is that you have to have something to collect that's your thing. Like, I like Plutos, Figments, and pins from attractions I've been on and hotels where I've stayed. I'm much more likely to find something I like on a CM's lanyard than a person who's only looking for "valuable" pins.

Now- that's not to say I won't snag a lanyard-only pin if I recognize it... but I'll just use it to trade for a "valuable" Pluto or Figment that I otherwise wouldn't be able to get. :)

Last trip DW and I saw an Animal Kingdom pin we wanted on a child-only lanyard and were very disappointed because we had been looking for a nice AK pin for awhile. We buy pins exclusively on looks and could care less about rarity or value so the pin sharks have ruined things for people like us.

We did end up getting our pin though. We paid someone else's kid $1 to trade pins for us. We freaked out this kid's mom (I think that if the she had mace on her should would have sprayed me), but after we explained to her what we wanted to do she had no problem with it. The CM's caught wind of what we were doing and just laughed it off because there aren't any rules against it.

Does anyone feel silly as "just adults" trading?

My mom and I are going to a girls only trip and she loves Bambi, so we bought some inexpensive pins to trade so she can get some more bambi ones if we can find them (im sure she will end up with alot more that she likes if she can't find Bambi) and I wanted to know if mostly people do this with kids and if this is something silly for adults only to do??

Probably not, but I wanted to ask!

Also, since im new to think, could someone telling me about Sharks and guppies?

Thanks!!

We don't have any kids and we love to pin trade. I saw more adults trading pins at WDW than kids. It's a hobby for all ages.

Sharks are bad traders that love to pick you clean of LE's and DA PINS. They love to talk down their value and trade rack pins for them. They offer insane trades that only favor themselves.

I only trade for what I like. I see this as only a hobby. I have a mixture of LE's, rack, and DA pins. Sometimes, I agree to some trades that make no sense from a dollar value perspective because I want a pin because it's cute or cool or just has sentimental value.

If you want to learn more about pin trading, check out the collector's board. Maggie

I use my daughter as "cover" but I'm the one who really is into the pin trading. I went to a pin trading event at WDW once and it was almost all adults there. It's really no sillier than collecting coins or anything else.

Besides, you're at Disney World- if you can't be silly there, where can ya?

I'm going to move this to our "Collector's Board" for you. I imagine you will get some terrific advice and information about this topic there.
