There are lots of people on these boards who can help. I am sure you wil get lots of good advice on home schooling.

I just wanted to respond to your comment on the teaching methods being used in your daughter's school. I think teaching methods have changed quite a bit since you and I were in schoool. In my girls' first grade, they are writing sentences daily, and they have not yet learned how to spell or read. I think it has made the process or learning to read and write move more quickly, since they are learning both at the same time, and understand the entire picture at the beginning.

Good luck to you.

If she's five and doesn't know her ABCs yet, I think you need to consider two possibilities:

1. Is she READY for school? That is, is she emotionally ready for school? Is she physically ready to sit through a classroom day? Is she young for her grade?
2. Is it possible that she has some type of learning disability? The school can test her.

I think you need a teacher conference to find out more about what's happening during the school day.

I don't want to be mean. I'm going to hope that you just posted that in a hurry without proofreading it. It happens to all of us, sometimes. If that's not the case, I would gently suggest that perhaps your daughter would do better learning her writing skills from a certified teacher. She has 13 or more years ahead of her. It's hard to see now that things will change, but they will. It won't always be like this; give it some time. Speak with the teacher about your concerns with your daughter's anxiety issues. Do not criticize her teaching, however - not yet. I've found the vast majority of public school teachers to be quite competent.

I'm sure I"ll get flamed....

but, if you didn't teach her the ABC's before now, why are you considering homeschooling where you'll have to teach her everything?

I was thinking the same thing. My mom actually taught me the alphabet before I started school.

I was trying very hard to word it as nicely as I could. :goodvibes

I am trying to give the OP the benefit of the doubt. Learning the ABC's can mean learning to say (sing) them, learning to write them (upper and lower case) and learning what sounds they make. She did not specify which she meant.

Also, children come into K with varying degrees of abilities - that is one of the greatest challenges a K teacher faces.

Beyond that, if the child is screaming every day, there is obviously an issue which needs to be addressed.

i know all countries are different and education systems etc but at 5 she is still really young. I work and 4 and 5 year olds who have just started their first year of school, and so far we have learnt 3 sounds and their letter names (which is less important). We have taught them 'a' 'm' and 't', but mainly the sounds of these, let alone writing them!!! Some children are ready to do things like that, others are not. At 5 shes still learning important social skills and learning through her play. You could just make it fun, like using chalks and writing on pavements just informally or water and a paint brush. If you worry about it alot, she will start to worry.

::nods:: Reading, etc is as much developmental as what's taught. Also, if the child is screaming everyday, there might be something else going on, which might not be solved by homeschooling.

That is what I was thinking as well.

If you really think homeschooling is the answer, you'll want to check with your district and state for the requirements you'll need to meet. For example, ours requires parents to have at least 45 college credits or they can take a class offered at some of the local colleges. In addition to that there are test requirements, forms to file, etc.

Homeschool requires much dedication and time from the parent. Its not something that should be gone into lightly. Have you talked to your daughter about why she is upset about going? Is she having problems with other students? Is it leaving you? Is it because its new? Find out what the problem is and try to fix that first before you jump into homeschooling.

Yes I did post in a hurry.Sorry about that.
She does know how to say her ABC's and most of the sounds, plus she could count to 50,write her full name and address, knows home phone number and cell numbers. All of this before school started.
School started here in Aug. the letters they have covered are a,t,m,s,b,c,f,r,w,p,l,k,j,and n. I feel they are moving a bit to fast, should a child in k-5 have a 10 word spelling test every week?
I know they way of teaching is way different from when I was in school,But to me they are moving too fast.

She is getting very frustrated by it all.I can tell by the way she does her homework everynight. She has math homework on mondays and thursdays, spelling everynight, plus her ABC homework on tuesdays and wenesdays.

I have talked with the Teacher several times all i get from her is that is the way she teaches.I have requested her to be moved to another room but there is no room.

I had thought that the screaming every moring was separation anxiety but she does not do this at girl scouts or her dance classes.

I did not post this to get flamed.I just wanted help to go in the right direction for my child and family.

Is she in all-day K? My girls were in half-day, and if they had covered all of this curriculum by this time last year, I would argee they seem to be going too fast.

However, state curriculum standards really force teachers to fly through material. I would expect all the classrooms to be teaching in the same way (my girls are in separate classrooms, and are moving at almost the exact same pace, using the same materials) If the teacher has some experience, though, I am sure she knows what most children can and can't handle.

My neighbor has successfully homeschooled her almost-teen kids. She enjoys it because the kids can learn so much more efficiently without all the other distractions in school - such as children acting up, and they can pursue their own interests for electives instead of mandated ones (art, music, library, PE).

Again, I wish you luck.

When is your DD's birthday, and what is the cut-off for K in SC? Is it possible that your DD is just a bit "young" for K?

We started HS'ing DS 5 yrs ago, but planned to send DD to public school. We sent her to a private preK and she was the youngest in her class (aug 4 BD). By the end of the yr it was very apparent that was not ready for K. The teacher said DD would have a very hard time with "''personal care" in PS because of her size. She did not have the gross or fine motor skills needed and many of her other skills weren't developed enough for her to thrive in a full day K.

This is very different from "she doesn't know her ABC's".

My youngest DS is in 1st grade this year. In kgarten he had a word ring, that she added about 10 words at a time to. He'd have to learn to read them, but not spell. They did "kid writing" every day, which means they'd write sentances using as many sounds as they could. Had writing their ABC letters as homework. But no formal tests. What you describe sounds more like what he's doing in 1st grade.

Is this just her teacher or how all the k teachers teach? Have you spoken with the principal?

My friend homeschools for religous reasons, and it is alot of hard work. I think there is a part of the DIS that is for homeschoolers, if you want to get info on it.
