What on earth do you talk about with people that you don't know? I was just looking at Alex's pictures and I just can't help but wonder! (now, mind you, this is coming from a very socially inept person, so I truely don't have a clue!)

It does look like they are having a good time, though! :)

I've ben to a few meets Denise; people pretty much talk about the same kind things they post about here on the CB. . . and even though you may not have met someone before, you do "know" them from having read what they share here on the boards. . :)

It can be a little weird at first, but it doesn't take long to feel like your hanging out with old friends. . and I've had a great time at every meet I've been lucky enough to attend. . :)

I agree with Willy, it's a bit awkward just at the beginning and then boom, I'm talking like I've known these people for years.......come to think about it, I HAVE known some of these DISers that long!!!:D :bounce:

I was reluctant to go with Jules to a meet in Houston last year.

But, I had a ball!

Everyone was so nice!!!!

That's when I became addicted!:D

I just cannot convince my DH to come. He always says it's wierd to meet "web friends". And he thinks I'm wierd already to check CB nightly.

I am a born talker and can talk to anyone about anything! I really can't tell you what I say to usually start a conversation but my DD says I can learn more about someone in a minute that she could in a year!

I was really scared at my first Dis Meet, but after you meet everybody the talk just flows! Remember, if you don't know what to talk about, you can always talk about WDW!:)

EROS...you're not at DIS-Con2?
I thought I read that they were passing out "I was hugged by EROS" stickers over there?

*******
The only way *I* would go to a DIS meet would be to meet up with my "good buddies" Nikole and BenStone. ;)

I don't know, Denise, I am still trying to figure out what to say. :teeth:

Pollyanna, my surrogate, JOHNTBAP, is handing out hugs and kisses for me there. Rumor has it that a few DISers have REFUSED her embraces............I'm crushed    ........

Dan, I really encourage you to try a DisMeet some time. . I think you'd really enjoy them!! :) :)

;)

You talk about Disney, of course!

Honestly, I am not much of a talker and quite shy with people I dont know very well. Ive only been to one Dis meet and was a little reluctant to go. I made DH & DSs come along too. In the end it was fun to meet these people who I "talk to" every day, and it was nice to have someone to talk to about Disney, who understands it like us. ;) I will try to get to another one some time.

While I haven't been to a DIS meet yet, I imagine it can't be any different than talking to folks while AT WDW.

DH & I always seem to strike up conversations with complete (willing) strangers (tourists & CMs) while waiting for shows or parades or fireworks. Kids are FUN to talk to. They tell you all about their trip so far. :)

And the folks at DIS meets aren't strangers!!

LOL, Dan.
I remember when I was going to WDW & would be meeting Dan for the first time. I was scared to death & thought there'd be long moments of awkward silence. However, I don't remember any moments of silence! LOL

I also met Uncle Kyle and it was the same way. It is weird because you don't know these people but in another way you do.

I spoke with Dan the other day on the phone and talked with a bunch of DISers. He just hands them the phone and you never know who you are speaking with! THAT is super hard for me but every single person I have talked to has been great.

I was thrilled to speak to Old Kicker this week. I squealed in his ear though. I hope he's OK. (Pardon the pun) ;):p

I've heard that too.:(

Do other DIS'ers really exist?:confused::teeth:

I believe Willy and CamColt both hit upon the most important key in enjoying a DIS meet... that being, "knowing" people from their postings on the DIS boards. When I met fellow DIS'ers on my 9/22/01 cruise, some of us had been "talking" for over nine months and it was such a joy to finally meet in person. Some of us had bonded quite well during the posting period and it was like meeting up with long distance relatives.

However, I came away with a different experience after attending a small local meet consisting of people who I was not familiar with at all (mostly) because I had no prior knowledge of any of their postings (again, mostly). At the time, I was an infrequent visitor/poster to the Community Board but heard of this meet in January 2002 and thought it would be neat to try. Oh, it was pleasant enough and the people were nice enough and there was talk of some Disney stuff but the majority of the conversation centered around other DIS posters (also unfamiliar to me at the time) and I came away sorta disappointed with the meet.

(Please - I mean no offense to anyone reading this who was at this same meet. Like CamColt, I am also a bit shy and not much of a talker. It took a lot for me just to attend on my own. I just felt very awkward and *out-of-the-loop* - so to speak. So, again, please do not take this personally.)

So, I have come to the conclusion that to fully enjoy a DIS meet - one must participate more in posting (or even lurking) so that you will *know* as many people as possible prior to meeting. And for people to *know* you and enjoy your company, then you should not lurk but post more.

JMHO

I was really nervous before the Dis meet I went to, but once you get there everyone (in my experience) is so friendly & nice that you're immediately at ease.:D I'm looking foward to another meet....hopefully soon!

I just started posting this past October (although I was a lurker for months before, hehehe); mostly on the resort board. I have just discovered the CB and have really enjoyed reading the posts and trying to know who is who. I, too, have wondered how awkward it would be but everyone seems so friendly on these boards. I do wonder if it is difficult for a newcomer to break in.
